AEW's headquarters are located in Jacksonville and WWE recently held a live event in the city. However, Kevin Owens, who took on former All Elite star Cody Rhodes at the show, made a reference to The American Nightmare's run in Tony Khan's promotion.
Kevin Owens has become one of the biggest heels in WWE in the past few months. He took out Randy Orton and Cody Rhodes with deadly piledrivers and is claiming to be the Real WWE Champion since Saturday Night's Main Event.
During a SmackDown live event taking place in Jacksonville, FL on Thursday night, Kevin Owens cut an interesting promo on Cody Rhodes where he mentioned how the people of Jacksonville had to put up with The American Nightmare for many years. This was seemingly a direct reference to Cody's run in All Elite Wrestling.
“Listen, I understand that Jacksonville suffered a lot of trauma because of Cody Rhodes because for many years you guys had to put up with him for almost every week, so I will do my best to help you heal by beating the hell out of Cody Rhodes.”
Kevin Owens and Cody Rhodes went on to face each other in a steel cage match for the Undisputed WWE Championship. The American Nightmare escaped the cage to retain the Undisputed Title against The Prizefighter.
Cody Rhodes left AEW to return to WWE in 2022
In 2022, Cody Rhodes shocked the world after leaving AEW to return at WrestleMania 38. He was revealed as the mystery opponent of Seth 'Freakin' Rollins and went on to defeat him at the Showcase of the Immortals.
Cody Rhodes' reason for returning to the Stamford-based promotion was to win the WWE Title and his return has been a huge success as he ended Roman Reigns' World Title reign at WrestleMania XL earlier this year.
We will have to wait and see if Cody Rhodes remains the Undisputed WWE Champion till WrestleMania 41 in Las Vegas next year.
