Mercedes Mone is one of AEW's top stars. However, she claims she played a role in a popular star signing with WWE.
One of the biggest women's matches this year took place at AEW Forbidden Door when Mercedes Mone faced off against Stephanie Vaquer. The CEO emerged victorious and won the NJPW Strong Women's Championship.
Following this match, Stephanie Vaquer shocked the world by signing with WWE and has since appeared at a couple of house shows in Mexico back in July. Vaquer even appeared on NXT TV this week.
During a recent edition of her Mone Mag newsletter, the TBS Champion claimed that their match at Forbidden Door played a role in WWE signing Stephanie Vaquer:
”Another time was with Stephanie Vaquer for AEW’s Forbidden Door. Stephanie flew in that day and got to the building maybe an hour before the doors opened. We just talked about the match a little where she speaks a whole different language (Spanish). That was so hard. I’m like, my God, we don’t get time to walk over our moves, we speak two different languages, and we’re both tired, jet lagged, and hungry, too. Yet, that also turned out to be such a great match. She was signed by the WWE days later. I’d like to think our match had a say in that!’‘ [H/T Ringside News]
Mercedes Mone names her match against Bayley as the "greatest women's match ever"
During her time in WWE, Mercedes Mone competed against some of the best women in the division. She had what many considered one of the best women's matches in WWE against Bayley at NXT Takeover: Brooklyn.
During the same edition of Mone Mag, The CEO recalled her match against Bayley at NXT Takeover: Brooklyn and named it the "greatest women's match ever." She even pointed out how she barely had any time to prepare for the match:
"We only had maybe five minutes to talk about our match in the ring. I wanted to tell her about this crazy spot. In truth, I didn't even want to practice with her or show her the spot because I was afraid that they were going to tell me no, or that the boys were going to see it and that they were going to take it away. Yes, that happens. So, I just kind of told her what I wanted to do. As I said, we didn't get to rehearse it or any other move. However, that match turned out to be the greatest women's match ever." It will be interesting to see whether Mercedes Mone will continue to deliver the same caliber of matches in AEW.
