MJF is one of AEW's biggest stars, and some believe he's on his way to being one of the most successful pro wrestlers of all time. However, the multi-time champion once had his eyes on a much different profession and thinks he could still make it. The latest from The Wolf of Wrestling includes shots at Joe Hendry and a certain former WWE Champion.
Maxwell Jacob Friedman infamously performed "You Are My Sunshine" on The Rosie O'Donnell Show at age 5, on the episode that aired September 10, 2001. The appearance resurfaced in 2019, but the New York native initially denied it was him. The gig was set up after MJF's parents submitted a tape of their son singing the same song, operatic style, while eating a pear.
He told O'Donnell that he wanted to be an opera singer and a pro wrestler when he grew up, noting then that Goldberg and The Rock were his favorites. Friedman has also done some singing in AEW.
Meanwhile, Joe Hendry has worked as a musician for more than a decade and was once close to signing a Sony Music contract with his band. The Prestigious One has incorporated his love of music into his wrestling persona while creating or performing his own themes and parody songs to further rivalries. The UK star performed an in-ring concert during Week 1 of NXT's Great American Bash.
AEW's American Champion recently spoke to Cultaholic and was asked if he's the best singer in pro wrestling today.
"Hands down. [What about Joe Hendry?] Joe Hendry? Sweet kid, I would f*****g murder him. [He's got a great voice] Yeah, yeah," MJF said. [From 37:49 to 37:56]
MJF was then asked about the singing abilities of Chris Jericho, who he performed "Me and My Shadow" with on the October 21, 2020 edition of Dynamite.
"Listen... Fozzy is incredibly produced. They do a great job. ... and also, I beat Chris Jericho, by the way. I don't know if you know that I tapped him out in the Salt of the Earth arm-bar, and the sounds he made, I will say, in that moment, to me they were angelic," MJF said. [From 38:08 to 38:36]
Friedman is set to defend his AEW American Championship against Will Ospreay at All In on August 25. He won the title on July 17, then retained over Templario on August 2 at the CMLL Super Viernes event in Mexico, and again over Michael Oku this past Sunday at a RevPro event in England.
