The drama surrounding Rey Fenix's status with AEW shot up to another level this week when the masked luchador seemingly criticized All Elite Wrestling and its president, Tony Khan, on X/Twitter. Wrestling fans have now reacted to Fenix deleting the tweets.
The Lucha Bros were set to depart the Jacksonville-based promotion after their contracts expired, but when rumors began circulating that Penta El Zero Miedo and Rey Fenix had already been in contact with WWE, Tony Khan tacked injury time onto the latter's deal, potentially keeping him with the company until next summer.
Penta is already a free agent, but Rey Fenix vented his frustration on X/Twitter this week, claiming that he'd needed a doctor but was ignored. Now, the lucha libre star has deleted the tweets, prompting fans to speak out about the situation.
Some fans took this as a sign that Fenix and AEW had come to terms on a release, which might involve an NDA:
"NDA and release incoming," wrote one fan.
"So maybe he is getting his release and they forced him to stay quiet?" another wondered.
Others suggested that All Elite Wrestling may have threatened legal action:
"AEW probably threatened to take legal action against him," said a fan.
"Tony Khan probably told him to delete the tweets😂," wrote another.
"that's why companies have lawyers. probably got a nice letter in the mail saying take it down or you will be owing us LOTS and LOTS of money," another fan explained.
Amid the speculation, some took the opportunity to poke fun at Tony Khan:
"Handing out NDAs for Christmas this year huh."
Rey Fenix's deleted tweets reportedly caused a stir in WWE
It was assumed that The Lucha Bros. would sign with WWE after departing All Elite Wrestling, but the injury time added to Rey Fenix's contract has thrown a wrench in those plans. Now, World Wrestling Entertainment might be looking into the claims the luchador made in his tweets this week.
WWE and AEW have both received criticism from former stars in the past, but it struck many as unusual for someone as reserved as Fenix to make such bold claims on social media. According to WrestleVotes on Backstage Pass, the former International Champion's now-deleted tweets raised some eyebrows in the Stamford-based promotion.
Of course, the TKO-led company has had its own issues with former superstars criticizing its medical policy, with the most famous example being CM Punk's blistering Art of Wrestling interview back in 2014. It's unclear if Rey Fenix's outburst has caused WWE executives to rethink their offer to the Lucha Bros, but the latest report from WrestleVotes indicates that they will at least examine the situation.
