Former WWE Champion Adam Copeland is now 'Cope' in AEW. The name might have been changed due to Copeland having a short name (Edge) throughout his wrestling career. Former SmackDown General Manager Teddy Long has also shared his thoughts on the change.
Adam Copeland made his surprising AEW return at Worlds End. On the post-Worlds End edition of Dynamite, Copeland debuted a new ring name where he was called 'The Rated R Superstar Cope'. This had some mixed reactions from the wrestling world. However, Cope will be sticking with the name for the foreseeable future.
During the recent edition of Sportskeeda's The Wrestling Time Machine podcast with Mac Davis, WWE Hall of Famer Teddy Long reacted to Adam Copeland's name change in All Elite Wrestling. He questioned the reason behind the change but acknowledged that it might have been Copeland's idea.
"So they left the land out in the Rated-R Superstar, Cope. Why would you even come up with that? Now, you understand why I don't pay them any attention? But I mean, I'm saying, though, you know, we gotta look at it like this, you know maybe that might have been his [Cope] idea." [00:26 - 1:00]
WWE veteran Matt Hardy on Adam Copeland's new AEW name
Adam Copeland shortening his name to 'Cope' has had some interesting reactions from wrestling stars. His former rival, Matt Hardy, has also shared his honest thoughts on The Rated R Superstar's new AEW name.
In a recent edition of his The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy podcast, the former WWE star claimed that Copeland wanted to get a similar name to 'Edge' in All Elite Wrestling. Hardy further said that Cope will always be Edge to him but doesn't hate the recent change.
"I mean, I know, I think coming in that's what he wanted to do. He wanted to get something similar to Edge, right. [...] You know, it's different. He's always gonna be Edge to me. No doubt about it. But I get that they're trying to rebrand him in some certain fashion. I don't hate it." [1:22 to 2:01]
We will have to wait and see what Tony Khan has in store for Cope in All Elite Wrestling in 2025.
