Adam Copeland's new 'Cope' ring name in AEW has been making rounds on social media. A potential backstage information about the name change has been revealed by wrestling veteran Bill Apter.
The Rated R Superstar debuted with a new name on the AEW Dynamite: Fight for the Fallen edition on January 1, 2025. The former Adam Copeland was presented as 'Cope,' a shorter version of his original name. However, fans gave mixed reviews on the change. Some also liked it, as it falls under the same category as his WWE name, Edge.
On the recent edition of Sportseeda's The Wrestling Time Machine podcast with Mac Davis, Bill Apter revealed that many WWE talent backstage referred to Adam Copeland as 'Cope,' which might be the reason behind the name change in All Elite Wrestling.
"That was his nickname. When I was backstage a lot, a lot of the guys, not at AEW, back in WWE, a lot of the guys, 'Hey, Cope, how you doing?' So, it's probably, yeah." [From 01:01 to 01:22]
Cope left WWE in August 2023 and inked a deal with All Elite Wrestling a few months later. He has had a successful run so far, and we will have to wait and see if The Rated R Superstar captures the World Title in 2025.
Dutch Mantell doesn't like Adam Copeland's new AEW name
Some veterans have taken Adam Copeland's name change lightly, as former WWE manager Dutch Mantell shared his reaction to the move.
Speaking on his Storytime with Dutch Mantell podcast, the wrestling veteran joked around the 'Cope' ring name and made it clear that he doesn't like The Rated R Superstar's new name.
"I don't like it already, Cope. Put an 'S' in front of it, could be 'Scope'... I wonder if they could get the 'S' to mean anything. Scope... Cope... [laughs] Yeah... Sullivan Cope, what the hell? Dr. Sullivan Cope? We'll come up with something if we keep throwing it around," Dutch Mantell said. [From 1:11:40 to 1:12:02]
We will have to wait and see how the fans adjust to Adam Copeland's new ring name in the upcoming weeks.
