AEW had to follow up on a hot start to wrestling this week with the Netflix premiere of WWE RAW this past Monday. Leaning into one of the undisputed strengths of his promotion, Tony Khan elected to kick off the latest episode of Dynamite with a high-octane singles match between Will Ospreay and Buddy Matthews.
The Aerial Assassin looks to return to winning form after losing to Kazuchika Okada in the finals of the 2024 Continental Classic at Worlds End last year. On the other hand, his opponent, Buddy Matthews, is seemingly looking to avenge his stablemate Brody King's loss to Ospreay on Dynamite On 34th Street last month.
The House of Black member got more than he bargained for with Will Ospreay, who utilized his reliable variety of offense to gain an advantage over Matthews. However, the latter used his prolific striking and counter-wrestling abilities to fight back against the Englishman. Ultimately, the former International Champion managed to secure the win on AEW Dynamite with his patented Hidden Blade.
After the bout, Ospreay praised Matthews as a solo performer and told him that he does not need to confine himself to The House of Black. Thus, AEW Dynamite opened with a hard-hitting, fast-paced match, followed by an intriguing tease about a major faction potentially splitting. This seemingly stayed true to the identity of All Elite Wrestling as a wrestling-centred brand.
