AEW has undergone many changes in 2024, and the year began with a shake-up in the form of The Young Bucks' takeover with Jack Perry and Kazuchika Okada. Nicholas and Matthew Jackson recently revealed they purposely had boring matches to fit their gimmick.
Earlier this year, The Young Bucks returned to AEW, bringing the EVP persona to television. They changed their names from Matt and Nick Jackson to Mathew and Nicholas Jackson, slowly removing what the fans loved about The Young Bucks. The duo captured the AEW World Tag Team Title at the Dynasty pay-per-view and dropped the gold to Private Party before taking a hiatus from the Jacksonville-based promotion in October.
In a recent chat on the Tunnel Talk podcast, The Young Bucks revealed they planned to stop doing their usual moves to get heat from the fans. The EVPs also spoke about how changing their moveset was hard.
"When we did the EVPs thing, we were like: 'Let’s just have really boring matches. Let’s stop doing all the super athletic moves that get the big reactions.' It is hard because one of the things in general is that most of our stuff is pretty exciting, it’s highspots," Matthew Jackson said.
A top AEW star just called one of his colleagues 'spoiled' and 'narcissistic' HERE.
Nicholas Jackson added that he stopped doing dives on purpose so people would wonder about their athleticism.
"I stopped doing dives for, maybe 8 months. I didn’t do a tumble out to the floor for about eight months and that was on purpose. We literally wanted people to think 'Are these guys not athletic anymore? Are they just boring wrestlers now?'"
Matthew Jackson reveals what pissed him off during AEW EVP gimmick
Matthew and Nicholas Jackson introduced their unique EVP gimmicks earlier this year in All Elite Wrestling. In the same interview on the Tunnel Talk podcast, Matthew Jackson recently revealed what made him angry during their run.
The former World Tag Team Champion revealed that the fans who thought The Young Bucks were 'washed' offended him because they were playing a gimmick on television.
“One thing that really pissed me off was someone said ‘I thought the Young Bucks were washed’ and I was thinking: ‘Oh, come on! You guys fell for the gimmick that we were doing? We didn’t forget how to wrestle out of nowhere. Come on, don’t be dumb.’”
The EVPs took a hiatus from AEW after Jon Moxley and his Death Riders started to take over the company. It will be interesting to see when Nicholas and Matthew Jackson decide to return to All Elite Wrestling television.
