A WWE veteran recently spoke about AEW's immediate future under Tony Khan's leadership. Vince Russo explained his perspective while talking about the company's ongoing TV deal negotiations.
Warner Brothers Discovery (WBD) currently airs AEW's weekly shows on its networks, TNT and TBS. In recent months, there have been significant concerns about Dynamite and Rampage's TV ratings. Meanwhile, the Tony Khan-led company's media deal is nearing its conclusion. Hence, the promotion has been negotiating a new agreement with the media conglomerate.
While the additions of Will Ospreay and Mercedes Moné to the AEW roster have certainly helped the product, many believe Khan has lost leverage in his negotiations with WBD officials.
On Sportskeeda Wrestling's Writing with Russo, Vince Russo said WBD might offer a smaller contract to All Elite Wrestling due to the Tony Khan-led management's recent shortcomings.
New Champs in WWE! More RIGHT HERE
"We would never ever know this because they would never publicly say this. But who knows if Warner signs them for less, for less, bro? Knowing that where are they gonna go? You know what I am saying? I mean, and then, now, you are deeper. Now you got a TV deal, bro but now you are getting less, and now you are deeper in the hole anymore, you know?" [9:46 onwards]
The WWE veteran compared AEW's current situation to TNA Wrestling's
To explain his viewpoint, Vince Russo gave TNA Wrestling's example, highlighting how the promotion once lost its TV rights under Dixie Carter's management.
On the same episode of Sportskeeda Wrestling's Writing with Russo, the former WWE head writer said AEW had minimal leverage at this point and was in a similar situation as TNA Wrestling was in the past.
"Bro, that's what happened with Dixie and TNA. She asked for more money when she had zero leverage. They gave her an offer, [but] she declined it and asked for more, and they [were like], 'Okay no more. Thank you very much.' 'Cause she had no leverage at that point." [10:35 onwards]
As of now, it remains to be seen whether the Tony Khan-run company manages to strike a new deal with Warner Brothers Discovery.
