Mariah May defeated Toni Storm at All In on August 25 to win the AEW Women's World Championship. Another key member of the women's division, Willow Nightingale, is keen to take the new champion's spot one day.
On July 10, May defeated Nightingale on AEW Dynamite to win the 2024 Women's Owen Hart Cup. After the match, The Glamour began feuding with Storm while Nightingale continued her rivalry with Kris Statlander.
In an exclusive interview with Sportskeeda Wrestling Senior Editor Bill Apter, Nightingale addressed whether she was surprised to see May dethrone Storm:
"I mean, she beat me, so! You spend time in the ring with someone and you learn a lot about them in a very short amount of time. I would say she is cunning, and that is probably her biggest strength. She is at the helm of the division right now, and so she is the one with the target on her back. We're all trying to get her spot." [3:21 – 3:50]

Although May lived and wrestled in Japan, Nightingale believes her former opponent's lack of experience might cause her problems in the long run:
"Her weakness might also be a strength of hers, that she is not super, super experienced. She's been doing this for a few years and she did have a little tenure over at Stardom, which helped her tremendously, but we do have a women's division that is full of people that have been wrestling 10-plus years, and that experience goes a long way." Willow Nightingale reacts to Mariah May betraying Toni Storm
In November 2023, Mariah May debuted in AEW as Toni Storm's protégé and biggest fan. She admired Storm's wrestling skills and wanted to meet her idol immediately after joining the company.
Discussing Mariah May's betrayal of Toni Storm on July 10, Willow Nightingale acknowledged that the villainous strategy worked out well for the Brit:
"I think that would be her weakness, is that she's still kinda getting that experience. She's getting great experience because look at where she's ended up, and she had a great mentor in Toni Storm, who I would consider one of the best of this generation, truly, so she lucked out with a mentor like that. And to betray her and undercut her, I don't like it but it's a smart move and it paid off." [4:26 – 4:55]
May retained the AEW Women's World Championship against Nyla Rose on the September 4 episode of AEW Dynamite. On September 7, Nightingale will return to in-ring action against Kris Statlander in a Chicago Street Fight at All Out.
