Tony Khan's announcement of Jon Moxley locking horns with Konusuke Takeshita at Double or Nothing 2024 has wrestling fans in splits. Jon Moxley is the IWGP World Heavyweight Champion and is set to face Konosuke Takeshita in an IWGP World Heavyweight Championship Eliminator Match.
Tony Khan recently announced that five years after Jon Moxley debuted for AEW, he would face off against Konosuke Takeshita, in what would be the two star's first one-on-one match against each other.
The announcement did not garner positive reactions as fans were perplexed as to why the match was taking place. To many, Moxley taking part in an Eliminator match for the title he is currently holding did not make much sense. The other side of the story was that the match was too high-profile to be a non-title bout.
Fans wondered why this was an Eliminator Match and not a Championship one.
"NJPW kicked up a fuss the last time they made a title match, Mox vs Hobbs," one user thought out loud.
"Wait it’s not even a title match and on PPV? What in the h*ll are we doing here?!" another was more brutal with their words.
"An Eliminator on PPV?" one user was simply confounded.
The announcement had universal disapproval.
"At least go back to just saying non title and quit trying to put a tux on a t*rd," another one said.
"As great as this match will be, stop with the eliminator matches," one quipped.
Takeshita and The Purveyor of Violence are part of the two most fearsome stables in AEW, with the former being in the Don Callis Family and the latter being a part of the Blackpool Combat Club.
Konosuke Takeshita discloses his frustrations working in Tony Khan's AEW
During a recent interview with DDT Pro-Wrestling, Konosuke Takeshita said he was under the misconception that only hard work was needed to get airtime on American TV.
The star seemingly aired his frustrations about wrestling in America.
“Everyone felt like they’re having fun wrestling here. I didn’t have any fun wrestling ever since I got to America. The effort was bearing fruit, but I didn’t feel the enjoyment. It was the most mentally exhausting period in all 12 years of my wrestling career. However when I stopped having fun, my matches were better received and I gained more recognition. And it's not proportional,” he said.
The Japanese wrestler was with DDT Wrestling from 2011 to 2021 before appearing on AEW programming.
It remains to be seen how the wrestling industry and, more importantly, Tony Khan, react to Takeshita's interview.
