A top veteran in the business recently talked about Mercedes Moné's transition from WWE to AEW, and some adjustments he had noticed she's made based on the fan reception. He believed that she had already found her groove.
Matt Hardy is someone who trod a similar path, as after spending years in the Stamford-based promotion, he has found himself jumping ship to other companies including TNA, and AEW.
During a recent edition of his Extreme Life of Matt Hardy podcast, he talked about how Mercedes Moné was someone whose career was built up in WWE. He compared how over there, they focused on building characters, and telling stories, while Tony Khan and AEW dealt with things a little differently as their main focus was in-ring competition. Everything else came second to that.
“Sasha Banks - Mercedes - is a WWE baby. You know, born and created and forged in the WWE. And with that very heavy character-driven - you know, I think that’s her instinct, I would imagine. Just because that’s how things are taught at WWE, as far as like finding a character and moving down a path where people get emotionally connected to you and what you’re doing. And then the work follows that and makes them even more if they enjoy the work as well."
He continued by talking about how she instinctively tried getting her CEO gimmick over with the crowd. Now, Hardy felt like she had gotten the hang of it, and had been focusing more on putting incredible matches than people liking her new persona.
“So, I could see that kind of being something new to her if she’s getting there. And as you said, I think you made a great point when you said she’s trying to get over The CEO gimmick and she’s trying to do this, especially starting as a babyface, right? I think she was kind of figuring out her way as all that was going down. And then once she realized like, 'Oh, maybe I can tweak it up.' And here it’s a little less about the persona." Mercedes Moné made history last night at AEW Worlds End
Last night, The CEO defended her TBS Championship in a rematch against Kris Statlander. Last month at Full Gear, they faced off in a bout that became the longest women's match in AEW history at 19 minutes and 23 seconds.
They topped that match last night as their second contest went for 24 minutes and 35 seconds. This would be the first women's match in the company's history to go above the 20-minute mark. Mercedes Moné ended up successfully defending her title.
She also took to X/Twitter to comment on her ending the year as champion, as she believed she was the greatest TBS Champion of all time.
"Leaving 2024 speechless! Forever the greatest TBS Champion of all time! #AEWWorldsEnd #CEO," Moné wrote.
Moné remains undefeated since her arrival to AEW. With it being almost a year since her debut, it has yet to be determined whether someone has what it takes to end her reign.
