Baron Corbin was backstage during AEW Worlds End 2024. However, there is an unfortunate update regarding his future.
Baron Corbin was once a promising star on WWE's main roster. It looked like the company had some big plans for him when he won the Money in the Bank briefcase in 2017 and also defeated Kurt Angle in the latter's retirement match. However, it all went downhill from there. A second run in NXT did little to revive his career and he was released from the company earlier this year.
It was recently reported that Corbin was backstage at AEW Worlds End 2024 along with AJ Francis and Tyler Breeze which fuelled speculation that Tony Khan's promotion might be interested in these three former WWE stars.
However, Sean Ross Sapp reported on his Fightful Select Q&A podcast that he hasn't heard about AEW being interested in Corbin, Francis, or Breeze. He also pointed out that TNA has been impressed with AJ's performances over the past year.
A top AEW star just called one of his colleagues 'spoiled' and 'narcissistic' HERE.
“I haven’t heard of AEW having any particular interest in any of them, but I do know that AJ Francis did impress some people within TNA, especially from where he was a year ago and what they were expecting out of him.” [H/T Ringside News]
Vince Russo commented on Baron Corbin's release
While Baron Corbin was never the top star in WWE, it looked as if the Stamford-based promotion had a plan regarding him. However, he was never able to get over despite the company repackaging him several times during his tenure. In the end, the Lone Wolf was released from the promotion.
During a recent episode of Sportskeeda's The Wrestling Outlaws podcast with host Dr. Chris Featherstone, Vince Russo claimed that Corbin was released because people within WWE felt that he was smarter and more mature than them and this didn't help his cause. He also recalled thinking that Corbin had the potential to be a top star the first time he saw him.
"EC3 has [also] fallen into this trap. When you get to the WWE, if they know you are smarter than them, that's not good. That's going to work against you. Corbin always came across to me as a little older, a little smarter, a little more mature. I know he was in the NFL. He'd been around the block and in my discussions, he was a very intelligent guy. They [WWE] don't like that. Intelligent people will question and seek answers and they don't like that. I thought the guy going all the way back to the first time I saw him, he had money written all over him." (4:37 - 5:42)
It will be interesting to see what the future holds for Baron Corbin as far as wrestling is concerned.
