One of Tony Khan's promotions is gearing up for some major changes, according to recent reports. The company in question is ROH, of which Khan is the owner since 2022.
Ring of Honor is regarded by many as one of the most important pro wrestling promotions in the history of the sport, responsible for developing and popularizing a host of future legends, including Bryan Danielson, Samoa Joe, Adam Cole and more. After experiencing a period of financial distress, the company went on a hiatus in 2021, only to be eventually purchased by AEW President Tony Khan in 2022.
Despite producing a weekly show that airs on the Honor Club streaming service, many have critiqued Khan's management of ROH owing to the brand lacking a well-defined style, visual identity and roster. However, amidst on-going media rights negotiations between AEW and Warner Bros. Discovery, a new report from Fightful Select suggests that changes might be on the way for AEW's sister-promotion.
According to the report, Ring of Honor is supposedly expected to receive a greater degree of care moving forward, with the forthcoming tapings in Arlington poised to be a major turning point for the brand, as it is set to be accorded dedicated taping shows. This, according to a source, is expected to help improve consistency in the creative process, as ROH will be able to tape several shows across a single day, in contrast with the practice of filming shows on a weekly basis before or after AEW Dynamite or Collision.
Cary Silkin commented on AEW President Tony Khan's handling of ROH
Cary Silkin, a former owner of Ring of Honor and personality who has been associated with the brand for many years now, recently shared his opinions on Tony Khan's management of ROH, echoing criticisms aimed at the 41-year-old sports executive over supposedly not showcasing and developing the promotion properly since acquiring it two years ago.
During a recent discussion on the past of ROH on the Mat Memories from Madison Square Garden podcast, Silkin unfavorably contrasted the company's former product with the product being crafted under Khan's leadership, claiming that the AEW Creative Head has not treated Ring of Honor well, regardless of his intentions and financial resources.
"Ring of Honor of that era tried to show some respect to professional wrestling. Sure, we had some wacky stuff. Sure, we had the the flippy dippy do was coming into fashion. The flippy dippy do was going on with Édouard Carpentier too... Ring of Honor, there was some good pro wrestling going on in that segment of it. Right now, Ring of Honor it's like no one cares at all. I don't care how much money Tony Khan has. It's not being treated very well." [H/T - WrestlingNews]
It remains to be seen what kind of changes Tony Khan will introduce to Ring of Honor programming in the near future to improve the product.
