There have been some questions surrounding AEW's lack of promotion for one of their recent events. A potential reason for this has just been revealed and this may be due to one of their current partnerships.
This past weekend, Wrestle Dynasty took place at the Tokyo Dome in Japan. Apart from AEW and ROH, the event featured stars from several companies including NJPW, CMLL, and Stardom. However, many noticed that on the side of the Tony Khan-led promotion, there was little to no mention of the event in the weeks leading up to it. Instead, it was business as usual, as they focused on talking about their weekly shows and upcoming events.
In a recent edition of the Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer addressed the situation, as they still found it weird how last Saturday Wrestle Dynasty followed AEW Collision, yet there was barely any promotion of the show. He believed that this was due to their partnership with WBD, as the pay-per-view aired on another platform and not on MAX.
"There was a reason. ... [but] it was really weird. Especially because it started literally the moment [January 4's 'Collision'] ended."
This was a note-worthy event as it featured the in-ring return of Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks winning the IWGP World Tag Team titles. Meltzer mentioned how they should at least show footage of Wrestle Dynasty during its fallout shows this week.
"They gotta show footage of Kenny Omega," Meltzer said. "They gotta bring up The Young Bucks winning the tag team titles." [H/T - WrestlingInc.]
How did AEW stars fare at Wrestle Dynasty?
Around 10 matches during the night featured stars representing All Elite Wrestling, including title bouts and grudge matches. For a majority of these, the results were as expected. But three matches stole the show, with some unexpected results.
Mercedes Moné was able to leave the Tokyo Dome in possession of three titles now as she won the RevPro Undisputed British Women's Title from Mina Shirakawa in a winner-takes-all match.
The Young Bucks defied the odds and became the IWGP tag team champions for the first time since 2018. Their former Elite ally Kenny Omega on the other hand was successful in his in-ring return in what was the match of the night.
Here are the results of the matches that featured AEW stars.
- International Women’s Cup: Momo Watanabe def Willow Nightingale, Persephone & Athena
- ROH World Tag Team Championship: The Sons of Texas (c) def House of Torture
- NJPW Strong Women’s Championship & Undisputed British Women’s Championship: Mercedes Mone (c) def Mina Shirakawa (c)
- David Finlay def. Brody King
- Shota Umino def. Claudio Castagnoli
- NEVER Openweight Championship & AEW International Championship: Konosuke Takeshita (c) def. Tomohiro Ishii

- IWGP Global Heavyweight Championship: Yota Tsuji (c) def Jack Perry

All these results will have future implications in AEW, and it remains to be seen how these get addressed tomorrow night on Dynamite, or this Saturday on Collision. All eyes will now turn to the next major pay-per-view, Grand Slam: Australia in February.
