The Sydney Swans are set to reward young gun Matt Roberts for his excellent form this season with a two-year extension. Roberts would still be in-contract next season, but would get a further two years added to his deal, which would keep the defender with the Swans until at least the end of 2027.
This decision is the result of a campaign where the 20-year-old has played in 12 of 13 games, being a pivotal member of the Sydney Swans’ half-back. His performance has seen him established as an important member of coach John Longmire's plans.
In Round 1, he was awarded a Rising Star nomination in the win against Melbourne. In that match, Roberts made 19 disposals and eight marks in his new role when he was initially drafted as a big midfielder.
Roberts’ manager Tom Seccull speaking on AFL.com.au's trade and draft show Gettable early this week, elaborated on his client's recent contract discussions with the Sydney Swans. He said:
"That's something we're looking at with the club at the moment. We've been chatting for a bit of a month now. We're just putting some finishing touches on that, which is great for Matty.”
Sydney Swans out-of-contract players in June 2024; a concise list
For the first half of this season, several unrestricted, restricted free agents, and out-of-contract players have had their contracts extended with the Sydney Swans and quite a number are left.
Restricted free agents are players who are out of contract, in the top 25 per cent highest paid at their club, and have been with the Sydney Swans for eight to 10 years, or have been in the AFL for over 10 years but have not had restricted free agent status previously.
Unrestricted free agents however, are not among the top 25 per cent highest paid at their club, and have either been with the Swans for over 10 years and have previously been a restricted free agent.
One of the league’s most sought-after free agents this year, Will Hayward signed a fresh five-year deal with the Swans a few weeks ago.
Key forward Logan McDonald is next on the Swans' priority list. McDonald is currently on many Western Australian clubs’ radar and would demand significant trade capital if he waits to explore his options at the end of the season.
In April, Errul Gulden, one of the AFL’s top young stars re-signed with the Swans. The four-year deal extension would keep him at Harbour City until at least the end of 2029.
The Sydney Swans are now left with unrestricted free agents; Harry Cunningham, Sam Reid, Robbie Fox and no restricted free agents.
Meanwhile Aaron Francis, Caleb Mitchell, Cooper Vickery, Harry Arnold, Jack Buller, James Jordon, Jaiden Magor, Lachlan McAndrew, Tom Hanily, Jacob Konstanty, and Logan McDonald are out of contract.
