Four-time leading goalkicker for the Brisbane Lions, Charlie Cameron is currently the subject of trade speculations from the media. The small forward has a year left in his contract but with his history of moving clubs before the end of the contract, it comes as no surprise that many expect clubs to come knocking for the star.
Cameron moved from Port Adelaide at the end of the 2017 season following a grand final loss to the Richmond Tigers even though he still had a year left on his contract. His current contract with the Brisbane Lions runs till 2025 unless he renews or the Lions lose him as a free agent.
AFL Media's Riley Beveridge reported on his podcast ‘Gettable’ that clubs are watching the contract situation with Cameron and the Lions.
“There’s a little bit of a trade watch on Charlie Cameron at the moment,” Beveridge said. This time there are more clubs who are keeping an eye on it. He’s got a year to go on his contract at the Lions. Do I expect him to be asking for a trade? At the moment, no. But it doesn’t stop the other clubs having interest in him and there are clubs interested in him.
“He’s done it before as far as moving clubs with a year to go on his deal, from Adelaide to Brisbane."
Beveridge stated that Charlie Cameron himself remains marketable and popular with the Brisbane crowd and even though he has not requested to be traded, the offers may entice him in the future.
Charlie Cameron working hard to regain top-scoring form
Charlie Cameron's struggle with his form has been a reflection of Brisbane's season. The forward has kicked 18.16 in 11 games, which is well below his average and the Lions have won just two of their last six games this season.
Earlier in the month, Cameron spoke to the media, where he said he was trying to keep it simple and avoid overthinking his in-game actions. As per news.com.au, he said:
"I just haven’t been playing consistent footy. Probably over the last few weeks, I’ve been just trying to go back to my focus areas, which is pressure and bringing energy…It hasn’t been showing on the scoreboard with goalkicking, which is disappointing, but I’ve got to keep working on it…then letting my game evolve after that.
“I’m just trying to get back to narrowing my focus and just keeping it simple. Hopefully, it’ll start clicking soon. I’ve just got to keep at it and keep believing in myself.”
Charlie kicked a goal and three behinds in Brisbane's loss to the Hawthorn Hawks. The Lions have a bye in Round 12 before they face the Western Bulldogs on June 7.
