Who is Toronto Argonauts QB John Matocha? All about Colorado Mines Orediggers star headed to Canadian Football League

John Matocha is an NCAA Division II legend who has elected to take his talents to the Canadian Football League. After going undrafted in the 2024 NFL Draft, Matocha has signed a contract with the Toronto Argonauts ahead of the 2024 CFL season.

Here, we will shine the light on Matocha and what to expect from him in the CFL.

Who is John Matocha?

John Matocha first made a name for himself as the starting quarterback for Magnolia West High School. He showcased his raw talent at the program and earned some collegiate offers upon graduation. Matocha chose to accept an offer from the Colorado Mines Orediggers.

It took Matocha two games in his freshman season to take over the starter's job in Colorado. His performances that season earned him first-team All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference honors and the Offensive Freshman of the Year Award.

Matocha did not rest on his laurels and significantly improved in his next full collegiate season. His performances for the Colorado Mines earned him the 2021 RMAC Offensive Player of the Year Award and first-team Division II football Academic All-American honors.

Matocha did not take his foot off the gas. He won two more RMAC Offensive Player of the Year Awards, two First-team All-RMAC nods, and ended his NCAA II career with the most total touchdowns in college football history.

What can we expect from John Matocha in the 2024 CFL?

The Toronto Argonauts are taking a chance on one of history's greatest NCAA II players. They're stocking up talent for the 2024 CFL season, and Matocha could contribute to their short-term and potentially long-term success.

Of course, we have to be careful about placing a lot of expectations on Matocha ahead of his first season in the pros. Playing in the Canadian Football League is remarkably different from playing second-tier college football, and he won't get an easy ride out there in Canada.

We expect Matocha to do well when he gets the chance to play. However, we'd be surprised to see the Argonauts toss him to the wolves. We expect the franchise to gradually break him into the league, teach him the rudiments of professional American people, and eventually watch him thrive in due time.
