The second most prestigious tournament on the ATP tour, Barcelona Open 2024, is an ATP 500 tournament where top players will compete in the singles and doubles categories. Currently sponsored by Banc Sabadell, the tournament is also popular, and the name is Torneo Barcelona.
The event is scheduled to commence on April 15, 2024, and end on April 21, 2024, when the temperature will be almost 19 degrees Celsius. David Ferrer and Jordi Cambra are the tournament directors and chairman, respectively. The 71st edition of the event has declared Lexus the official car sponsor of the tournament.
Barcelona Open 2024 will have 48 players in a single draw, and 16 final teams in doubles draw. The tournament will celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona by holding a special edition, having 12-time champion Rafael Nadal and two-time Carlos Alcaraz as the main stars of the edition.
The tournament winner in the singles and doubles categories will receive 500 points each. The total prize money for the tournament is € 2,782,960. Kei Nishikori has received entry into the tournament as the wildcard. Rafael Nadal was given entry using a protected ranking.
Founded in 1953, the Barcelona Open was a combined ATP and WTA tournament until 1980. The tournament was the joint initiative of Carlos Godo Valls and Count of Godo after the tennis club moved to Pedralbes, a neighborhood in Barcelona. Vic Seixas won the tournament for the first time in the singles and doubles category with Enrique Morea.
The earlier tournament was part of the Grand Prix Tour, which was later shifted to the ATP Championship Series. Rafael Nadal holds the record of winning the tournament 12 times in his career. In his honour, in 2017, the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona centre court was renamed Rafa Nadal Arena, also called Pista Rafa Nadal.
Carlos Alcaraz is the defending champion in the singles category, returning to register a hat trick after winning the Barcelona Open 2024. Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni are the defending champions in the doubles category.
The Barcelona Open 2024 is scheduled from April 15 to April 21, 2024. The qualifying matches will start on April 13, 2024, and the first round of the tournament will commence on April 15, 2024.
