The 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup is the ninth ICC Men's T20 World Cup tournament, scheduled to be played in the West Indies and the United States of America from June 2 to June 29, 2024.
The ICC released the groups and fixtures on January 5, 2024. The West Indies, who had earlier hosted the T20 extravaganza in 2010, are hosting the tournament for the second time while the co-hosts USA are hosting it for the very first time.
The first-ever T20 World Cup in the shortest format of the game was hosted by South Africa in 2007. Team India’s then new-found captain MS Dhoni and his young team climbed great heights and won the inaugural tournament. It paved the way for the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008. Since then, the T20 format has seen new world champions like Pakistan (2009), England (2010 and 2022), West Indies (2012 and 2016), Sri Lanka (2014), and Australia (2021). England are the current defending champions, having won the T20 World Cup for the second time in 2022 against Pakistan in the final.
Twenty teams were divided into four groups (Group A, Group B, Group C and Group D). The league stage will be played from June 2 to June 18. The top two teams from each group will compete with each other in the Super Eight from June 19 to June 24, where the eight teams will be divided into two groups and the top two teams from each group will qualify for the knockouts.
The 2024 T20 World Cup is scheduled to be the ninth ICC Men's T20 World Cup tournament, scheduled to be played in the West Indies and the United States of America from June 2 to June 29.
The ICC has confirmed the nine venues that will host matches across the tournament namely, Antigua, Barbados, Dallas, Florida, Guyana, New York, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, and Trinidad and Tobago. The opening match between the co-hosts United States of America and Canada is scheduled at the Grand Prairie Cricket Stadium, Florida on June 2, 2024. The semifinals have been scheduled at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy, Trinidad and Tobago, and the Providence Stadium, Guyana respectively. The Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados will host the final on June 29, 2024.
Unlike the previous editions, the T20 World Cup 2024 would see a range of as many as twenty teams in the fray under the pretext of globalizing the game, divided into four groups. The teams that are competing for the coveted trophy are:-
West Indies and United States of America (automatic qualification for being co-hosts)
Australia, England, India, Netherlands, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, and Sri Lanka (top-eight finish in the ICC T20 World Cup 2022)
Afghanistan and Bangladesh (finished in the Top 10 ICC T20 Rankings at the end of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022)
Ireland and Scotland (European Qualifiers)
Nepal and Oman (Asian Qualifiers)
