"I got to the locker room and realised I'd forgotten my underwear" - When Andre Agassi revealed embarassing truth behind his match day outfits

Andre Agassi once found himself in an amusing predicament during the 1999 French Open when he had to play a match commando. Reflecting on the incident, he admitted it was an "embarrassing" moment as he wasn’t wearing anything under his shorts.

Agassi shared his thoughts during a media interaction centered around his 2009 autobiography, 'Open.' The book offers an unfiltered glimpse into his life, delving into the pressures of being a tennis prodigy, his complex relationship with the sport, and his personal struggles, including drug use, insecurity, and a quest for identity.

That year, the American triumphed at Roland Garros, defeating the likes of Franco Squillari, Arnaud Clement, Chris Woodruff, Carlos Moya, Marcelo Filippini, and Dominik Hrbaty before beating Andrei Medvedev in the final. Interestingly, he stopped wearing anything under his shorts during the tournament after accidentally forgetting once and deciding to stick with it.

He said:

"I got to the locker room and realised I'd forgotten my underwear. What can a man do? I just commandoed it. After that it was a case of 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it'. It actually feels good."

He added, directing towards the audience:

"I don't want to unsettle you, but I'm actually freebagging tonight."

Reflecting on his triumph during a 2020 media interaction, Agassi described it as the "best moment" he had ever experienced on a tennis court in terms of accomplishments.

"I’ve got to say it was the best moment I’ve ever had on a tennis court, as far as an accomplishment goes. And the feeling was me living the rest of my life truly believing I wouldn’t have another regret as it relates to my career," he said.

The American then revealed that he had almost missed the tournament due to a shoulder issue he was dealing with at the time:

"Two years earlier I’d fallen from No. 1 in the world to No. 140 in the world and I’d climbed all the way back up again. But still at this time clay was very difficult for me. I almost didn’t play the tournament because of a shoulder issue I was having."
