The Detroit Red Wings and the Tampa Bay Lightning are the two NHL teams with the most wins in a single season. During different seasons, both teams have 62 wins in 82 regular-season games.

The Detroit Red Wings (82-62-13) secured the most wins in a single regular season during the 1995-96 NHL campaign. During that campaign, the Red Wings accumulated a total of 131 points and the team scored 325 goals throughout the regular season.

Sergei Fedorov was the leading goal scorer for the team in the regular season as he accumulated 107 points (39 goals and 68 assists). The Detroit Red Wings finished first in the Central Division and were one of the heavy favorites to win the Stanley Cup that year.

However, the Detroit Red Wings were defeated by the Colorado Avalanche in the Western Conference finals. The 1995-95 NHL regular season is considered the best regular season of all time.

Tampa Bay Lightning's 2018-19 NHL regular season

The Tampa Bay Lightning are another team tied with the Detroit Red Wings to secure the most wins in a single regular season. The Lightning (82-62-16) secured the most wins during the 2018-19 season.

During the campaign, the Tampa Bay Lightning accumulated a total of 128 points in their regular season. The team managed to score 319 goals. The team finished first in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference. Captain Steven Stamkos scored the most goals for TB during the 2018-19 campaign with 45. Meanwhile, Nikita Kucherov led the team with 128 points.

The Tampa Bay Lightning entered the 2019 Stanley Cup playoffs as one of the favorites to lift the crown. However, their journey was ended by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the first round series of the the Eastern Conference. The St. Louis Blues were crowned the Stanley Cup champions that year.

In the 2022-23 NHL season, the Boston Bruins (54-11-5) have a legitimate shot at surpassing the record with 12 games remaining on the schedule.
