The Sunagakure arc might be the most dynamic change we see to Boruto characters since the start of Boruto: Two Blue Vortex. Since Jura's introduction, fans have seen evil versions of characters they have followed throughout the Narutoverse.
The Sunagakure arc revolves around Konoha and Suna ninjas going to slay Ryu and Matsuri. Ryu is a divine tree clone formed from a claw grime feeding on Shinki, and his sights are set on killing Gaara. Code has also been tasked with killing Boruto by Jura, the leader of the divine tree clones.
The tone of the entire manga is also changing with it becoming more grim and this new arc is proof. These battles might lead to some characters dying, while some will survive. Here are four Boruto Characters who could die in the Sunagakure arc and four who won’t die.

4 Boruto characters who could die
1) Kankuro
Kankuro is Gaara’s elder brother and one of the closest people to the Kazekage. Throughout the Narutoverse, we have seen Kankuro strive to protect regardless of the situation. In the Chunin exam, he carried Gaara away after his defeat to Naruto. Also, after Gaara was whisked off by Deidara and Sasori for his jinchuriki to be extracted by the Akatsuki. Kankuro was the only person from the Sand who tried to rescue Gaara.
Kankuro is protective of his younger brother and though the manga has not shown him tailing Ryu and Matsuri, there is a huge chance that he is lurking somewhere, ready to spring at the two divine trees. What makes Kankuro susceptible to die this time around is the difference in power between him and the divine tree clones. If Kankuro charges blindly like he normally does, we might lose one of Suna's most adored Boruto characters.
2) Gaara
Gaara is currently trapped in Shinki’s sealing Jutsu before Matsuri heavily injured him in battle, and that leaves him in a vulnerable state. With Gaara immobile, he is at the mercy of Ryu who wants to slaughter him. For Gaara’s death to occur, he must first be unsealed by Ryu who knows how to undo Shinki’s sealing jutsu.
Considering Konoha and Suna ninjas are hot on the Matsuri and Ryu trail, Gaara’s death won’t come so easily due to the support around him. Gaara also loves to self-sacrifice and will give up his life if it means the survival of others. Matsuri will take advantage of that due to her previous fighting experience with Gaara. The Kazekage has had a long history with manga readers since Naruto, and his dying would be tough to bear, but necessary for the story to progress.
3) Code
Code doesn’t serve any plot need anymore. He served his purpose in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations and was one of the most disliked Boruto characters. While he was rumored to be stronger than Jigen, his last battle with Boruto proves he doesn’t come close. After his attack on Jura which led to his arm being blown off, Code has been sent to kill Boruto. Unfortunately for Code, he doesn’t know that Kawaki and Boruto are now a team.
With Kawaki’s limiters set to be removed by Amado and Boruto able to use a plethora of new Jutsu, Code’s death is set to come sooner rather than later. If he dies, fans might be treated to some of the best fights in Narutoverse.
4) Kashin Koji
Kashin Koji is Jiraiya’s clone and former comrade of Isshiki Otsutsuki. He has been a huge part of Boruto's growth indirectly and directly, as he is Boruto’s current teacher. Throughout Boruto: Two Blue Vortex, Kashin Koji has proven himself to be one of the most important Boruto characters, and this is due to his ability to see into the future. This ability helps him share intel with the current Hokage.
Kashin Koji also tracks down various divine tree clones and is responsible for the Konoha ninja finding Ryu and Matsuri. Due to his vast knowledge of the Otsutsuki and the future, Kashin Koji is also at risk of being targeted by Jura and Bug’s divine tree clone. Bug’s divine tree clone is more dangerous to Kashin Koji as he possesses the knowledge of the entire Kara and should know of Kashin Koji’s ability.
4 Boruto characters who won’t die
1) Boruto
The entire narrative of Boruto is hinged on his survival, and if the beginning of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations is true, his death won’t come in this arc. Boruto is currently teaming up with Kawaki and plans to take down the various divine tree clones.
The manga has yet to show the entirety of Boruto’s abilities, but from the little shown by the manga, Boruto can take a divine tree clone on his own. Boruto is also pairing up with Kawaki who is set to get his limiters removed by Amado. These two factors are the reason why Boruto won’t die anytime soon.
2) Kawaki
Kawaki is one of the most hated Boruto characters and for good reason. Apart from stealing the life Boruto had, he also sealed Naruto and Hinata in another dimension, preventing them from being with their children, Boruto and Himawari.
While many fans wish for Kawaki’s death, he and Boruto will not die anytime soon as they are set to have a final in a destroyed Konoha later in the manga. Kawaki has also proven to be reliable with his ability to control his Karma and access large reserves of power.
3)Sarada
The beautiful thing about Boruto: Two Blue Vortex is how it charts its own story separately from the world of Naruto. This means more Boruto characters will be at the forefront of the story than characters from the previous Narutoverse. Sarada is one of those characters at Boruto: Two Blue Vortex's forefront.
Her role goes beyond Boruto’s teammate. In the manga, one of the Suna Ninjas asks her whether she is in love. Sarada is a replacement for Sasuke in the story, so she is not dying anytime soon.
4) Konohamaru
While Konohamaru’s entire family is prone to tragedy, from Hiruzen to Asuma, the jonin might be the only one with a different fate. While there is a risk of him dying later in the manga as shown in the beginning of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, he will most likely not die in the Sunagakure arc.
Konohamaru served as Boruto, Sarada, and Mitsuki’s teacher. He also leads the attack on Matsuri and Ryu along with Suna Ninja. Konohamaru became a major character in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations and his dying right now will stall the entire series.
Final Thoughts
The Boruto characters at the highest risk of dying have followed readers right from Naruto and Naruto Shippudden. These old characters need to allow new Boruto characters to grow. New Boruto characters like Code have served their purpose in the manga and their being alive for much longer limits the story.
Boruto: Two Blue Vortex is proving to be more action-paced than Naruto and the last arcs have featured interesting fights. The story is getting more and more distinct from Naruto, with the characters possessing godlike abilities and the power system having slight changes. The Sunagakure arc will change the direction of Boruto: Two Blue Vortex forever.
