In chapter 268 of Jujutsu Kaisen, Yuji delivers 2 letters from Gojo Satoru to Nobara and Megumi. Both letters are considered as Gojo’s last words to his students.
In his letter to Nobara, he informed Nobara about her mother and family. And, in his letter to Megumi, he finally informed Megumi that he had killed Megumi’s biological father. The letter ends with a very gojo-like tone, and he apologizes with “sowwy”.
Throughout Jujutsu Kaisen, Megumi was in the dark about his parents. When Gojo went to meet Megumi, he apathetically said, their parents had abandoned them. With Gojo’s letter, Gege finally informed Megumi about his father’s death.
Gojo’s letters were a very emotional gesture for the characters, as well as for the audience. However, there could have been many other points in the plot when Megumi could have come to know about his father’s death. This listicle explores the possibilities of 4 better and 4 worse ways to reveal Toji’s death to Megumi.
4 better ways to reveal Toji's death to Megumi better than Gojo's letter in Jujutsu Kaisen
1) Gojo informing Megumi in person
Gojo has been Megumi’s legal guardian since Megumi was only 6 years old. Gojo mentored Megumi and tried to be a father figure to him in his unique ways. Even after being so close for years, Gojo never revealed to Megumi the reason why he took Megumi under his wing.
There could have been abundant ways for Gojo to have man-to-man talks with Megumi about his past after he grew up. However, Gojo never did and for whatever reason kept Megumi completely unaware of his parents.
Gojo might have feared Megumi’s retribution upon hearing the fact that Gojo was the one to kill his father. However, rather than giving him an oneliner letter, having a clear talk with Megumi would have been a far better scene in Jujutsu Kaisen.
2) During Megumi's fight with the re-incarnated Toji
Throughout his teen years, Megumi was apathetic about his parents and considered them a nuisance for abandoning him and Tsumiki. As for the audience, they knew about Toji’s death, however, they also didn’t know that Toji cared for Megumi until his resurrection during Shibuya Arc.
When Toji was resurrected during Shibuya Arc and fought with Megumi, they didn't recognize each other. However, Toji eventually realized that he was fighting his son, and after hearing that his surname was “Fushiguro,” not “Zenin,” he killed himself. As for Megumi, he wasn't even unaware of his father’s appearance.
Although Toji’s self-sacrifice proved his paternal love for Megumi, it could have been way nicer if he had talked with Megumi. Nothing can be more dramatic and emotional than finally an emotional reunion between a father and a son.
3) While trying to find out how he was related to Zenin Clan
According to Naobito Zenin’s will, after his death, Megumi became the new head of the Zenin clan, due to Gojo’s disappearance. Toji didn’t want Megumi to serve under the Zenin clan. Therefore, as his dying wish, he asked Gojo to do something about it.
Till Gojo’s sealing into the “prison realm”, he has safeguarded Megumi from the Zenins. However, when Megumi finally became the head of the clan, he reluctantly accepted the offer due to Maki’s persuasion.
What was surprising, was that Megumi didn’t even try to enquire about his connection with the Zenin clan properly. His usual nature kept him mostly unbothered by this incident. However, trying to investigate his connection to the Zenins, could have been a good way to get to know about his father’s death.
4) Megumi trying to find out about Gojo's past
Megumi and Gojo had a very close yet complex relationship. According to their ages, Gojo is around 12 years older than Megumi, which makes him too old to become a sibling and too young to be a father.
Gojo suddenly appeared in Megumi’s life and took him and his sister in. However, Megumi never seemed to care to know about the reason for Gojo’s interference with his life.
Megumi never tried to investigate Gojo’s past as well. Probably it was the result of the weird dynamics they shared, albeit caring so much for each other.
However, after Gojo was sealed, Megumi could try to dig into Gojo’s past, mostly the role of Suguru Geto in Gojo’s life. Even, the plot demanded one such scene. And, putting a scene like that, could have also been another way to reveal Toji's death to Megumi in Jujutsu Kaisen.
4 ways to reveal Toji's death to Megumi that would be way worse in Jujutsu Kaisen
1) Kenjaku telling Megumi
Instead of Gojo’s letter, Jujutsu Kaisen could have had many worse ways to reveal Toji’s death to Megumi. One such way was making Kenjaku do the did.
Kenjaku inherited Suguru’s whole memory, therefore he was well aware of Toji’s death. Given his scheming persona, he could have easily told Megumi about it to instigate him. After all, there can be nothing more twisted than being raised by one’s father’s killer.
2) Naoya Telling Megumi
Naoya Zenin in Jujutsu Kaisen was not happy at all with Naobito’s will. He was raised as the next clan leader and wasn’t ready to hand over the power to Megumi.
During his fight with Maki, it was apparent that he knew about Toji and Gojo’s confrontation. And surprisingly, he seemed to have high regard for Toji as well. It would have been natural for Naoya to inform Megumi about Toji’s death.
However, Naoya informing Megumi about his father’s death could have impacted him significantly, and Gege avoided that.
3) Gakuganji's sarcasm on Megumi's enthusiasm to free Gojo from Prison Realm
In the Jujutsu Kaisen world, Gojo was regarded as the strongest sorcerer. However, his status and personality brought him many adversaries as well. Gakuganji was one of the people, who hated Gojo Satoru.
After Gojo was sealed inside the prison realm, he was among the people, who supported Gojo’s expulsion from Jujutsu society as a collaborator in the ‘Shibuya incident’. On the other hand, Megumi and other students were restlessly trying to bring Gojo out of the prison.
Gakuganji could have been the one to make sarcastic comments at Megumi’s effort to save his father’s killer. Considering Megumi’s emotional state at that point, it would have been a way worse idea than Gojo’s letter to reveal Toji’s death to Megumi.
4) Jujutsu higher-ups informing Megumi
After Gojo was sealed inside the prison realm, shockingly the Jujutsu higher-ups branded him as a collaborator in the Shibuya incident. Megumi and other students protested against it and made their plans to save Gojo and put an end to this farce.
In Jujutsu Kaisen, the higher-ups didn’t take any direct actions to stop the people from saving Gojo. However, they could have tried to stop them by creating an internal strife. And, the best way to do so, would be to tell Megumi about Toji’s death.
Although Megumi seemed to hate his father for abandoning him and Tsumiki, it’s hard to fathom what could have been his emotional state after receiving a manipulated story of his father’s death from Jujutsu higher-ups. In any possible way, it would have been another worse way to reveal Toji’s death to Megumi in Jujutsu Kaisen.
Final Thoughts
Gojo writing a letter to Megumi to reveal his father’s death is a unique way to reveal Toji’s death to Megumi. Writing a letter means, Gojo anticipated his demise and didn’t want to leave the world without informing Megumi about his father’s death.
While writing a letter has an emotional significance, the oneliner letter was written in a comical tone. The scene was tragi-comical. Although Megumi accepted the fact easily, readers could see an emotional look in his eyes.
Although the scene was significant, there could have been other ways to reveal Toji’s death to Megumi in Jujutsu Kaisen, mostly if Gojo had told him in person.
