Kohei Horikoshi's My Hero Academia recently reached its conclusion on August 5, 2024, marking the end of a generational run that left a feeling of bittersweetness among fans. While the majority of the fanbase was saddened to see the beloved manga come to an end, not everyone was satisfied with how things ended, especially for the series protagonist, Izuku Midoriya.

There were also those who criticized Horikoshi for not fully resolving each and every character arc or plotline. Although the My Hero Academia epilogue did provide satisfying conclusions to majority of the series' central plotlines, a few plotlines and queries here and there were left unanswered or ambiguous. With that in mind, let us look at the five My Hero Academia plotlines that got wrapped up in the end, and five that went unanswered.

5 My Hero Academia plotlines that received a definitive conclusion

1) The Todoroki family storyline

The Todoroki family plotline was one of My Hero Academia's most important and engaging storylines. It showcased the tragic lives of all members of the Todoroki family, who were mostly victims of Enji Todoroki, aka Endeavor's crazed obsession with becoming the No.1 Hero.

Due to the massive power gap between him and All Might, Endeavor was determined to create an offspring with the potential to surpass the Symbol of Peace one day. However, this unreasonable and nigh-impossible mission of Endeavor led to him both physically and emotionally tormenting and breaking his own family in the process.

This particular plotline eventually received an overall satisfying conclusion in the epilogue, as the members of the Todoroki family came to terms with their trauma and got together to spend some time with Toya Todoroki for his final days.

2) The twisted relationship between Himiko Toga and Ochako Uraraka

Ever since Himiko Toga first came across Ochako Uraraka, she developed a strange fondness and a sense of familiarity with the latter. As the two faced off a few more times, however, Himiko dismissed her previous fondness for Ochako, claiming that she is just like her parents.

During the Final War arc, Ochako kept trying to reach out to Himiko. Despite suffering a fatal wound, Ochako pushed forward and admitted her true feelings to Himiko, and even offered to give the latter all of her blood.

After an emotional exchange, Ochako called Himiko 'the cutest girl in the whole world', which led the latter to sacrifice her own life to save the former. Although her fate was left ambiguous for some time, it was later officially confirmed in the epilogue that Himiko Toga had passed away on the battlefield.

3) Tomura Shigaraki's Redemption

For the longest time, fans had often wondered if a villain as vile and destructive as Tomura Shigaraki could actually be redeemed. Fortunately, the conclusion of Shigaraki's character arc provided a definitive answer to this query.

Through Deku's efforts, all the hatred inside Shigaraki's heart had finally vanished. Even after All For One tried to take over his body as a final resort and basically pushed him out of existence, it was revealed that Shigaraki had managed to survive with Nana Shimura's help, following which he helped Midoriya defeat All For One and asked his longtime rival to do his very best in the new world that was to come.

4) Hitoshi Shinso joins Class A

Ever since his introduction in the U.A. Sports Festival arc, Hitoshi Shinso became immensely popular among the fans as well as the students of Class A. It was later revealed by Shoto Aizawa that he had taken Shinso under his wing and was training him to properly use his Brainwashing Quirk, so that he could join the Hero Course sooner rather than later.

In the My Hero Academia epilogue, it was revealed that Hitoshi Shinso had finally joined Class A in the second year as Yuga Aoyama's replacement, which was certainly a delight to both fans as well as his new classmates.

5) Yuga Aoyama's Redemption

In one of the series' darkest and most shocking twist, it was revealed that Class A's Yuga Aoyama was acting as a double agent for All For One, and was the main reason behind the League of Villains' previous attacks on U.A. High.

That said, upon learning about Aoyama's backstory, fans as well as his classmates sympathized with him and gave him an opportunity to win back their trust by working with them to turn the tables on All For One. Although Aoyama did manage to redeem himself at the end of the day by giving it his all in the final war, he opted to leave U.A. High afterwards and promised his friends that he would regain their trust by becoming a great hero one day.

Fortunately, Aoyama managed to live up to his words, as in the final chapter, he was seen working as a professional hero alongside all his friends from Class A.

5 My Hero Academia plotlines that Horikoshi failed to answer

1) The Origin of Quirks

Perhaps the biggest mystery in My Hero Academia is the origin of Quirks. While it is a known fact that the individuals who first showed signs of having a Quirk were none other than All For One's mother and a luminescent baby born in China, Horikoshi still hasn't answered where Quirks actually came from.

Although a theory was proposed by the villain Overhaul that Quirks were no more than a mere virus, there was no concrete proof to back up his perspective or any other theory that explored the origins of Quirks. As such, it remains one of the series' biggest unanswered questions.

2) The effect of Quirk Singularity on the Hero society

The Quirk Singularity is essentially a theory proposed by Dr. Kyudai Garaki, who suggested that Quirks would actually become progressively stronger with each generation, which would make it harder for the human body to adapt to them, thereby eventually leading to the extinction of the human race.

This theory was finally proven to be true by Tomura Shigaraki's mutation in the Final War arc, since his body forming hundreds of fingers and creating a form to defend himself indicated that this is the likely result of the human body adapting to Quirks. However, the repercussions of this theory being proven true and what effects Quirks had on the human body in the future were never addressed again.

3) The revelation of Izuku Midoriya's father

Another huge mystery that fans were hoping to finally get revealed in the epilogue was none other than - Who is Izuku Midoriya's father? Apart from his name being Hisashi Midoriya and his power being an unnamed Fire Breath Quirk, fans know next to nothing about Izuku's father. Now that the series is over, many fans are still dissatisfied with the fact that Horikoshi never revealed the true identity of Izuku's father.

4) The relationship between Izuku Midoriya and Ochako Uraraka

Given that both Izuku and Ochako were shown to have romantic feelings for each other, fans expected the two of them to eventually get together at the end of the series. Unfortunately for fans, Horikoshi ended up going in the exact opposite direction, as a relationship between the two beloved characters never happened.

Even though Izuku eventually got to be a hero alongside his friends once again, there's no telling if he will actually get the chance to get together with Ochako ever again.

5) The future of Katsuki Bakugo and Shoto Todoroki

Although the final pages of My Hero Academia chapter 430 showed Izuku becoming a hero again alongside Katsuki Bakugo, Shoto Todoroki, and the rest of his friends from Class A, readers never truly got to know about the characters' futures, or what their hero rankings are.

The question about whether Bakugo or Todoroki joined any particular hero agency, or got their own agency, is something that fans will likely never know unless Kohei Horikoshi holds a QnA session to answer queries about his series' conclusion.
