Gege Akutami's story, even through the Jujutsu Kaisen Final Volume, has focused heavily on pairings since the series' first chapter. While the conflict between Gojo and Sukuna took center stage in the latter part of the series, Yuji and Sukuna's unbridled hatred for each other has also served as one of the main themes.
While Sukuna's actual relationship with Yuji remained a mystery for more than half of the series' runtime, he was later revealed as Yuji's uncle in a roundabout way. Yuji was somehow created by Kenjaku, who tracked down the soul of Sukuna's twin, whom Sukuna had consumed, making Sukuna Yuji's uncle.
However, recent retranslations have clarified that Wasuke housed the soul of Sukuna's brother, making Sukuna Yuji's grandfather, while simultaneously giving much more depth to Wasuke Itadori's words and overall role in the story.

Jujutsu Kaisen Final Volume: Yuji and Sukuna's dynamic is connected to Wasuke
Wasuke Itadori, Yuji's grandfather, was one of the first few characters to be introduced in the series. While Wasuke's death is swift in the first chapter, his final words, directing Yuji not to end up like him, become the basis of Yuji's actions.
Wasuke's final words to Yuji constantly remind him to do good and have people around him during his last moments. These words can be reinterpreted as Wasuke advising Yuji to avoid following a lonely path.
While the concept of a lonely path seems disconnected from the narrative, it has been used numerous times throughout the series to signify the feelings of Sukuna, Gojo, and Kashimo, regarded as the strongest of their respective eras.
While all three of these "strongest" characters did, in fact, walk and inhabit a lonely path due to their supreme strength, Sukuna is the only one who has fully indulged in it. Sukuna's entire being is centered around himself and his whims. This is also evident through Sukuna's conversation with Kashimo, where Sukuna makes it clear that he does not lament his solitude, as it is of no consequence to him.
Gege's latest reveal of Wasuke being the actual reincarnation of Sukuna's brother adds another layer to Wasuke's own words. In a manner, he was trying to advise Yuji against following the very path that Sukuna embodies. Wasuke's words against loneliness were previously simply interpreted as a plot device to trigger Yuji's heroic nature.
However, the latest Jujutsu Kaisen Final Volume revelations have cleared that misunderstanding. Wasuke Itadori's words were a simple piece of advice against Sukuna's worldview, serving as Wasuke's parting gift just before Yuji and Sukuna merged into one.
