The Jujutsu Kaisen manga ran from March 2018 to September 2024, and its chapters were compiled into 30 tankōbon volumes. Although Gege Akutami's magnum opus approached its natural conclusion, fans are excited to know what lies ahead for the characters they have come to love and cherish.
Many are not ready to bid farewell to their favorite characters just yet. Instead, a significant portion of the fandom is calling for a spin-off centered around one of the series' beloved characters as the next step for Jujutsu Kaisen. One character who stands out as a top contender for a spin-off is Toji Fushiguro.
Fans believe a spin-off featuring Toji Fushiguro could be the best way forward for Jujutsu Kaisen
Jujutsu Kaisen's ending left many questions unanswered, leaving fans to wonder if they will ever learn more about some of their favorite characters from the series. In a recent epilogue, Gege Akutami shared his thoughts on the series, admitting that the criticism and pressure from fans had taken a toll on him.
Akutami also reflected on the difficulty of maintaining the series' momentum over six years. This insight underscores the immense workload he was under and how grueling it can be for a mangaka to create one of the world’s most popular series.
Thus, it is highly likely that Akutami will take a well-deserved break and enjoy some time off rather than immediately focus on spin-offs. However, fans remain eager for more content and believe that Toji Fushiguro could be the perfect character for a spin-off.
Such a spin-off could be a full-length series or a one-shot written by another mangaka with Gege Akutami's permission. There are several instances of this in the shonen genre, such as My Hero Academia: Vigilantes, a spin-off manga written by Hideyuki Furuhashi, and Sasuke Retsuden, an original spin-off written by Jun Esaka and illustrated by Masashi Kishimoto himself.
The spin-off could delve into Toji's largely unexplored backstory. He was once an active member of the Zenin clan, but since they valued cursed techniques above all, Toji likely endured immense suffering at their hands because he was born without cursed energy. In a lot of ways, he was quite similar to Maki Zenin.
Like Maki, Toji might have also been pushed into the Zenin clan's disciplinary pit and left for dead, only to survive the ordeal. The scar on his face could have resulted from him fighting in the pit. An experience like this could be why Toji grew up to hate the Jujutsu Society and became a sorcerer killer.
After leaving the Zenin Clan, Toji married a woman and took her surname, "Fushiguro." Together, they had Megumi. This woman's kindness helped him change his ways, leading him to stop gambling and hunting sorcerers. She could have prevented Toji from enacting revenge on the Zenin Clan.
Following the death of his first wife, Toji reverted to his old ways. He remarried and had a daughter named Tsumiki. True to his character, Toji abandoned his children, leaving them to fend for themselves.
A spin-off could explore the tragic and joyful aspects of Toji's past, showing his journey from a boy without cursed energy to a sorcerer killer strong enough to rival Gojo Satoru. Covering his actions, the people he killed, and the motivations behind his choices could be an intriguing story for Jujutsu Kaisen fans to witness.
