Monday, May 28, 2024 saw the latest issue of author and illustrator Gege Akutami’s original Jujutsu Kaisen manga series be released. Fans were particularly anxious for this latest issue, as the prior installment had seemingly set up the return of fan-favorite Satoru Gojo. While many were apprehensive, there was legitimate hope amongst some fans that Gojo had indeed returned.

However, Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 261 revealed that fans were half-right, but not in the way which they’d like to be. The issue revealed that Yuta Okkotsu had taken over Gojo’s body via Kenjaku's Cursed Technique, evidenced by the trademark stitches on the forehead of Gojo’s body also seen on Geto’s.

Moreover, Jujutsu Kaisen’s latest installment gave fans the full backstory on this plan and how it came about, revealing that Yuta spoke to nearly everyone but protagonist Yuji Itadori about it. Likewise, this flashback has now utterly ruined what’s one of, if not arguably the most wholesome Gojo-Yuji moment in the series, and seemingly the last overall.

Jujutsu Kaisen’s likely last Gojo-Yuji moment will never be the same following chapter 261’s reveal

The moment in question comes from Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 222, and sees Yuji and the other Tokyo Jujutsu High students waiting to wish Gojo good luck before he departs to fight Sukuna. The students are discussing what the best way to encourage Gojo is, with no one really having the right idea of what to say.

Gojo is then seen walking out sternly and seriously, in hindsight clearly dwelling on both the task that lies before him and what will happen should he fail. Kinji Hakari, Maki Zen’in, and Yuta, who were all a part of the discussion surrounding Yuta’s plan, are shown to have nervous and concerned looks on their faces as well.

However, Jujutsu Kaisen protagonist Yuji Itadori takes the lead, approaching Gojo and simply telling him that his Infinity Cursed Technique is in the way. Despite seeming confused at first, Gojo takes off his jacket and tells Yuji to give it his best shot, prompting Yuji and the others to slap Gojo on the back for good luck as he walks by.

Needless to say, it’s an incredibly wholesome moment which highlights Yuji and Gojo’s love for each other and their bond, as well as the role Yuji plays amongst his allies.

The full context is exactly what makes this scene so troubling in hindsight, with Yuji not understanding the true consequences of Gojo’s loss and why everyone was so tense.

It’s being considered one of the most harrowing scenes in the series by fans given this hindsight, and rightfully so. This is likely the last time Yuji Itadori and Gojo will ever speak, as it will likely be for everyone else besides Yuji.

Yet despite virtually everyone in this scene but Yuji knowing the potential reality that could come, they all immediately brightened their moods and placed their faith in Gojo.

The scene is also particularly difficult due to the fact that no one tells Yuji why the mood is so serious, not even Gojo who clearly doesn’t want to deter Yuji’s optimistic demeanor. In turn, it adds another layer to the interaction, with Gojo clearly trying to calm both himself down and everyone else there by acquiescing to Yuji’s request.

Nevertheless, it’s not necessarily a certainty that this will be the last interaction between the pair. Many fan theories point to Toji Fushiguro and Suguru Geto’s soul-based feats in the Shibuya arc as evidence to how Gojo could come back. However, even if Gojo comes back, this scene will be forever destroyed knowing what was on everyone’s minds and what came after.
