Akutami keeping Mahito alive could have saved Gojo's life in Jujutsu Kaisen

Mahito was one of the strongest cursed spirits from Jujutsu Kaisen and his biggest ace was his cursed technique. Idle Transfiguration allowed the cursed spirit to modify the body of anyone however he wanted, whether it be disorienting it to the point of death or rearranging it to give someone a body that couldn't be achievable through surgery.

The latter point of his cursed technique might have proved crucial to the revival of one of the fan-favorite characters, Gojo. If Gojo's soul had been inside his body a few minutes after his defeat against Ryomen Sukuna, the cursed spirit's technique might have revived him, just as it happened with Mechamaru when he contracted with the antagonists' side.

Jujutsu Kaisen: Why Mahito's survival might have led to the revival of Gojo Satoru

During the Shinjuku Showdown arc of Jujutsu Kaisen, the strongest sorcerer of today, Gojo Satoru, fought against Ryomen Sukuna, the strongest sorcerer in history. After a heated battle where the latter was assisted by Megumi's shikigami, Gojo Satoru lost and his body was chopped into two pieces.

After his death, the cursed sorcerers gathered both parts of his body and stitched them together to use in the last phase of the fight against Sukuna, as Yuta possessed the strongest sorcerer's body. This proved crucial to the sorcerers because this weakened the King of Curses and he died due to this.

Unfortunately, the win against Ryomen Sukuna came at the loss of the fan-favorite character, Gojo Satoru. However, this loss could have been avoided if the sorcerers had the assistance of the strongest cursed spirits, Mahito. Mahito, introduced in the Vs Mahito arc, was an unregistered special-grade cursed spirit who had mastered the Idle Transfiguration technique.

This allowed him to transfigure the soul of anyone, just as he did to Junpei to kill him. The cursed spirit was absorbed by Kenjaku in the Shibuya arc and confirmed deceased when he appeared in the cycle of rebirth in the last chapter. At the start of the Shibuya arc, Mahito used his cursed technique to heal the Heavenly Restriction of Kokichi Muta (Mechamaru).

This allowed him to get out into the sunlight without any harm to his wellbeing. Similarly, if Mahito was alive, he could have healed Gojo Satoru, just like he did with Mechamaru, right after he was sliced into two pieces. As the soul remains intact after a few minutes of death, Mahito's cursed technique might have proved crucial to the return of the most beloved character of Jujutsu Kaisen.

Analysis and final thoughts

With the concept of Reverse cursed energy already present in the series, Shoko might have used this energy to prolong the connection between Gojo's soul and body, increasing the chances of his survival in a scenario where Mahito was alive.

However, as the series hardly even revealed anything regarding what happened to the strongest sorcerer after he was sliced in half, it is hard to speculate how his survival might have been made viable (even with Mahito's Idle Transfiguration).
