Jujutsu Kaisen has built up to a boiling point and gets hotter. Creator Gege Akutami's imagination and storytelling seem boundless, as every week brings a different surprise. So far, the biggest shock is Yuta Okkotsu returning to battle in Gojo Satoru's body by copying Kenjaku's technique.
Yuji Itadori has been at the center throughout the story, being mostly affected by whatever happens in some way or the other. With the way things are shaping up, Akutami might have a final mishap to fuel Yuji's true awakening, which will end this destructive dance that is Jujutsu Kaisen.

Jujutsu Kaisen: Akutami might have one final tragedy for Yuji before his true awakening
To begin with, Akutami has been throwing misfortune after misfortune at protagonist Yuji. Ever since the Junpei Yoshino-Mahito incident, the author has thrust Yuji into a pit of suffering. Again, every single time, the pink-haired teenager has fought his way back with difficulty.
Besides Junpei, he witnessed several tragic incidents aimed directly and indirectly at breaking his spirit. Yuji has had to go through things like Ryomen Sukuna's repeated slandering, Kento Nanami, Nobara Kugisaki and Choso's deaths, the destruction at Shibuya, Sukuna possessing Megumi Fushiguro, and the death of Gojo Satoru. Despite such agony, the boy has re-emerged to put up a fight each time.
However, it seems like Akutami has one last hurdle for Yuji - Megumi's death. To elaborate, Yuji's awakening has felt incomplete. He wasn't able to finish off the Demon King due to whatever reason. For this very reason, Jujutsu Kaisen's author might use Megumi's death as a final nail in the coffin.
Yuji has developed friendships with almost every character in the series, his closest ones being Gojo, Nobara, and Megumi. With two of the three gone, Yuji's sole focus is saving Megumi from Sukuna. As seen in the manga, he is doing everything necessary and possible to save his friend, the last one close to him.
After all, it was Megumi who he interacted with first and who was one of the people against Yuji's execution. Now, his life hangs in the balance. With such odds, everything was a blur to Yuji, save for separating Sukuna's soul from his. But what if this was taken away, too?
Given that Megumi has lost the will to continue living and would rather die, as seen when Yuji briefly got through to his soul, this is not a far-fetched concern. Such a scenario would tip Yuji over the edge, awakening an uncontrollable rage within him.
Given Yuji's track record, he might even gain access to his Domain and the full extent of his abilities if this were to happen. Then, fans would finally get the version of the protagonist they have been longing for.
Final thoughts
If Jujutsu Kaisen creator Gege Akutami were to do this, fans might get a glimpse of a never-before-seen side of Yuji Itadori. The sweet, composed, and good-natured boy would take a backseat while something more sinister takes its place, and with good reason.
If this happened and Megumi died, the merger would likely become void since Kenjaku transferred authority to Sukuna, aka Megumi. In that case, there is a possibility that instead of the merger beast, Team Jujutsu High will need to stop a rampaging Yuji. Only time will tell what Akutami is planning.
