Blades, and swords, in particular, are among the most iconic weapons in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)

Blades are among the most widely used weapons in the One Piece world. This category encompasses all items that have at least one sharpened edge, including katanas, sabers, and longswords, as well as polearms and claws. Basically, it can be said that all swords are blades, but not all blades are swords. Like any other weapon, blades can be enhanced through the use of Haki.

Depending on its type, shape, and size, each bladed weapon has its own unique characteristics. The combat effectiveness of a blade depends on the wielder’s skill and power, but some blades are inherently stronger than others. Indeed, no weapon can compete with the all-powerful Black Blades, which are permanently coated in Haki.

The blades that have a name of their own are classified into four ranks according to their craftmanship: the countless Graded Blades, the 50 Skillful Grade Blades, the 21 Great Grade Blades, and the 12 Supreme Grade Blades, the rarest of all. So far, One Piece author Eiichiro Oda has revealed the names of several dozen blades, but only the rank of a few.

Disclaimer: This article contains major spoilers from the One Piece manga up to chapter 1123.

A complete list of the named blades in One Piece, updated to chapter 1123

36) Funkfreed

Spandam wielding Funkfreed in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)
Spandam wielding Funkfreed in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)

Coward and inept, Spandam is unable to wield Funkfreed properly, which is a shame, considering the blade’s unique ability to transform into an elephant-sword hybrid and a full elephant. This is because Funkfreed has somehow eaten the Elephant-Elephant Fruit, gaining its unique features.

As such, the sword combines the edge and hardness of a blade with the size and strength of a pachyderm. In the hands of a powerful swordsman, Funkfreed would be a much more effective weapon.

35) Cat Claws

Kuro wielding Cat Claws in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)

A pair of black-furred gloves with razor-sharp blades on the fingers, the Cat Claws are the signature weapon of the shrewd pirate captain Kuro. After moving at high speed to flank his opponents, Kuro would use these feline-like claws to inflict deadly injuries on them.

The combination of Soru-like speed and life-threatening attacks with the claws made Kuro a dangerous foe. However, a sufficiently skilled fighter would be able to react to Kuro’s movements and defend himself, as Luffy did during their battle at the beginning of the series.

34) Daisenso

Krieg wielding Daisenso in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)

A dishonest and arrogant pirate, Krieg possesses a vast arsenal of weapons, among which is the one-ton heavy Daisenso. Krieg is able to lift and wield this massive battle spear with one hand, even while wearing his special Wootz Steel armor.

In addition to its lethal drill and long reach, Krieg’s Daisenso has another hidden mechanism. Specifically, its head can detonate, generating ravaging explosions. It took all of Luffy’s unwavering determination to endure and eventually overpower the Daisenso’s attacks.

33) Kiribachi

Arlong wielding Kiribachi in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)

During his final struggle with Luffy, Arlong pulled off Kiribachi, a frightful weapon resembling a huge handsaw. He used his enhanced physical strength as a Fish-Man to swing around Kiribachi’s serrated blade, causing devastation all around.

Despite Kiribachi’s force, however, Luffy was able to block the weapon with his own hands. Enraged for what Arlong did to Nami, he then crushed some of Kiribachi’s blades and defeated the Fish-Man by striking him with the Gum-Gum Battle Axe.

32) Kessui

Hannyabal wielding Kessui in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)

Kessui is the signature weapon of Hannyabal, the former Vice Warden and current Warden of Impel Down. A very unusual weapon, Kessui is a naginata with two katana-like blades attached to each end.

Essentially, Kessui looks like a pair of katana swords held together by a spear. By making Kessui spin rapidly to generate friction in the air, Hannyabal can ignite its blades, and perform dangerous flaming attacks.

31) Shigure

Tashigi wielding Shigure in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)

The trusted subordinate of “White Hunter” Smoker, Tashigi, is a young Marine officer whose dream is to recover all the Meito that are in the hands of outlaws. Tashigi’s sword is Shigure, a katana whose hand guard has a fancy four-petaled design.

After the two-year timeskip, Tashigi has increased her prowess with Shigure. She can now use the sword to resist and deflect the impact of a cannonball, as well as perform quick-draw techniques to swiftly cut her foes.

30) Bamboo

T-Bone wielding Bamboo in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)

Bamboo, a finely decorated sword with a perfectly straight blade, was the sword of the now presumed dead Marine officer T-Bone. A testament to the blade's fine craftmanship, T-Bone could use it to perform formidable flying slashes.

Using Bamboo, T-Bone was able to kill a Sea King with a single blow, as well as cut through metal trains. He earned himself the nickname “Ship Cutter” for being able to carve up entire ships as if he were cutting a tender steak. Still, T-Bone stood no chance against Zoro, who easily defeated him during the Enies Lobby Arc.

29) Eisen Whip

Ohm wielding Eisen Whip in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)
Ohm wielding Eisen Whip in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)

Eisen Whip was a sword equipped with a particularly rare Dial, enabling it to stream Iron Cloud. This substance had the durability and sharpness of iron, while still maintaining the weightlessness of a cloud. This allowed the user to freely manipulate and reshape the blade for both offensive and defensive purposes.

The owner of Eisen Whip was Ohm, the strongest subordinate of Enel. Thanks to his versatile yet deadly weapon, Ohm's test, the Ordeal of Iron, had a scary survival rate of 0%, which is telling of his weapon's effectiveness. However, Roronoa Zoro defeated and overpowered Ohm during the Skypiea Arc.

28) Shirauo

Amande wielding Shirauo in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)
Amande wielding Shirauo in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)

An extremely long nodachi, Shirauo is the sword of Amande, a prominent member of the Big Mom Pirates. Despite the uncommon size of this weapon, Amande is able to wield it with great proficiency and speed.

Shirauo’s sharpness is remarkable, as Amande could use it to cut through Perospero’s Candy Wall, which was tough enough to withstand a direct hit from Luffy’s Gear 3, at least during the Whole Cake Island Arc. She was also able to effortlessly cut through King Baum’s massive body.

27) Kirisame

Hody wielding Kirisame in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)
Hody wielding Kirisame in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)

Along with a huge trident, Kirisame is the preferred weapon of New Fish-Man Pirates leader Hody Jones. Kirisame is a razor-sharp curved blade that Hody typically uses to overpower his enemies.

When fighting underwater, Hody combines his proficiency with Kirisame with his features as a shark, swimming at high speed to attack his targets. During the battle with Luffy, Hody tried to murder the young pirate with Kirisame but failed to do so as the latter managed to break the blade.

26) Shark Cleaver

Bastille wielding Shark Cleaver in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)

Shark Cleaver was the sword of Vice Admiral Bastille. Despite the weapon’s incredible weight, Bastille was able to wield it with ease, even with one hand, which emphasized his remarkable physical strength.

However, when Bastille challenged Sabo, the number two of the Revolutionary Army easily blocked Shark Cleaver. Moments after, Sabo used his special martial arts style, the Dragon Claw Fist, to shatter the sword.

25) Durandal

Cavendish wielding Durandal in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)

A long rapier made of highly flexible iron, Durandal is wielded by Cavendish. Due to Durandal’s unique features, the blade of this sword can bend to absorb an incoming force without breaking. This allows Cavendish to deflect attacks and withstand powerful impacts.

Upon entering his Hakuba form, Cavendish uses Durandal to perform quick and deadly attacks. He was able to knock out countless fighters in Dressrosa’s Corrida Colosseum, as well as brutally injure Dellinger from the Donquixote Pirates.

24) Soto Muso

Kawamatsu wielding Soto Muso in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)

Soto Muso is a high-quality sword wielded by Kawamatsu, who typically uses it to perform his signature techniques with the Kappa Style. Kawamatsu bought the sword when he was a child and has grown fond of it.

A testament to this blade’s exceptional craftmanship, Kawamatsu was able to use it to wound Kaido, although only superficially. While Kaido only suffered minor damage from Kawamatsu’s attack, the latter’s feat remains impressive, given the Yonko’s exceptional durability.

23) Straw Sword

Hawkins wielding Straw Sword in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)

The Straw Sword is the signature weapon of Basil Hawkins, one of the Eleven Supernovas of the Worst Generation. As its name implies, this weapon is literally composed of straw. Basil Hawkins uses his tricky Devil Fruit powers to generate the straw.

Hawkins can unleash the sword’s true form by transforming it into a giant scarecrow-like effigy that is linked to his body. This allows Hawkins to control the scarecrow at will but also forces him to suffer any damage it takes. The straw monster has incredible strength, which Hawkins can further boost by using his tarot cards.

22) Soul Solid

Brook wielding Soul Solid in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)
Brook wielding Soul Solid in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)

Brook has been using Soul Solid for decades, as he obtained this cane sword more than fifty years before the present One Piece narration. During the two-year timeskip, the members of the Longarm Tribe sharpened Soul Solid, increasing its combat effectiveness. Moreover, Brook learned to imbue the blade with his Devil Fruit powers, turning it into a “Freezing Sword”.

Using the Revive-Revive Fruit to control his soul, Brook can unleash the very cold of the underworld to perform freezing attacks. This enabled him to inflict pain on Big Mom’s Homies, which are allegedly immune even to Haki.

Soul Solid’s light blade allows Brook to fight with his trademark fencing-like combat style, cutting down his opponents with quick draw-and-sheathing techniques. For even better results, he can also combine his Devil Fruit-amped swordsmanship with his hypnotic music.

21) Yubashiri

Zoro wielding Yubashiri in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)

A stylish katana with a black lacquered hilt, Yubashiri was one of Roronoa Zoro’s swords in the initial part of the story. Ipponmatsu gave this sword to Zoro out of admiration for the skill and bravery that he had shown in testing himself against the Sandai Kitetsu’s curse.

Yubashiri was a lightweight sword, which allowed Zoro to move swiftly, exploiting his agility to perform fast attacks and flank his opponents. Zoro used Yubashiri along with his other swords during the Straw Hat crew’s adventures in Arabasta, Skypiea, and Enies Lobby.

During the battle in Enies Lobby, however, a Marine officer named Shu used his unique Devil Fruit ability on Yubashiri, causing it to rust and disintegrate. Out of respect for Yubashiri, Zoro deposited the sword’s remains in front of the Rumbar Pirates’ funeral monument in Thriller Bark.

20) Pretzel

Cracker wielding Pretzel in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)

A large double-edged sword, Pretzel is wielded by Charlotte Cracker, one of the the Big Mom's Sweet Commanders. During the Whole Cake Island Arc, Cracker amped Pretzel's blade with Armament Haki. His prowess was enough to injure Luffy, even though the latter was using his Gear 4 transformation.

Cracker can also use his Devil Fruit powers to create countless replicas of Pretzel, each one of them retaining the original’s sharpness and power. This allows him to defend himself and attack at once.

19) Punishers

Killer wielding Punishers in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)
Killer wielding Punishers in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)

A pair of gauntlets equipped with curved, scythe-like blades, the Punishers are the signature weapon of Killer, the right-hand man of Eustass Kid. A fearsome Supernova of the Worst Generation, Killer relies on his speed and agility to perform swift attacks with the Punishers. Using them as hand scythes, he can rush towards his opponents and slash their body in a flash.

Killer can also spin around the Punishers, turning them into buzzsaws. By doing so, he creates shockwaves at the speed of sound, which he can use to inflict internal damage to his enemies, injuring them from the inside. This move enabled him to hurt Kaido, despite the latter’s nigh impenetrable physique.

18) [ex aequo] Terry Sword

Dorry wielding Terry Sword in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)
Dorry wielding Terry Sword in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)

Dorry has possessed this gigantic version of a regular longsword for several decades. He also used it to duel with his friend Brogy. Despite their conflict, however, the two Giants never ceased to respect each other as genuine friends.

To protect the Straw Hats from a giant goldfish that was about to devour them, Dorry and Brogy blasted through the monster with their trademark Hakoku attack. However, after a century of non-stop fighting, their weapons failed to withstand their own power, and shattered.

18) [ex aequo] Bruiser Axe

Brogy wielding Bruiser Axe in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)
Brogy wielding Bruiser Axe in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)

Brogy’s signature weapon, the Bruiser Axe, was nothing but the gigantic version of a regular battle axe, with a massive blade, and a wooden handle. Due to Brogy and Dorry fighting for over a hundred years, however, their weapons could no longer withstand their own exceptional might, and broke when they performed their Hakoku technique.

Probably, this was also because Dorry and Brogy’s trademark Hakoku move involves the usage of an advanced form of Armament Haki. Dulled from the century-long duel, both the Terry Sword and the Battle Axe were unable to sustain that power output anymore.

17) Mogura

Katakuri wielding Mogura in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)

Mogura is a huge trident whose middle prong is a double-edged spear, and the two lateral ones are half-blades. It’s the primary weapon of Charlotte Katakuri, the strongest subordinate of Big Mom. A genius fighter, Katakuri can employ Mogura in combination with his Devil Fruit powers and Future Sight ability.

Shapeshifting his body with the Mochi-Mochi Trust while using an advanced form of Observation Haki to briefly see into the future, Katakuri can flank his opponents, striking them with Mogura in the most unexpected ways.

With the Mochi Thrust technique, Katakuri alters his body to twist his arm and then unleash a devastating drilling stab with Mogura. Although Luffy was remarkably agile, he couldn't fully dodge the sword's attack and was grievously wounded after it grazed him.

16) Kikoku

Law wielding Kikoku in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)

The signature weapon of Worst Generation member Trafalgar Law, Kikoku is a large nodachi whose hilt is trimmed with white fur. Kikoku has a special reputation, as it’s said to be a cursed sword. Due to Kikoku’s size, Law usually carries it over his shoulder.

Law uses Kikoku in conjunction with the Ope-Ope Fruit’s powers, which allow him to manipulate anything within a certain range. As such, he can cut his targets without harming them, but bypassing their durability, as well as stab them as if he were performing an injection.

The Ope-Ope’s Awakening allows Law to use Kikoku to pierce his enemies and electrocute them from the inside. He can also implode anything the blade has passed through by releasing a tremendous shockwave. Using these techniques and teaming up with Eustass Kid, Law severely injured Charlotte Linlin “Big Mom”.

15) Sandai Kitetsu

Zoro wielding Sandai Kitetsu in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)

A katana with a flame-shaped outline and a rounded, golden hand guard, Sandai Kitetsu was crafted by Kozuki Sukiyaki, and became one of Zoro’s most iconic weapons. As the shopkeeper Ipponmatsu warned Zoro about Sandai Kitetsu being a cursed sword, the green-haired pirate decided to test his luck and willpower against the curse.

Zoro won the trial and took the sword for himself. Since then, he has been using it skillfully. After the timeskip, Zoro used Sandai Kitetsu to defeat Hody Jones, leaving the latter on the brink of death with a single blow. This was all the more impressive as the battle took place underwater, and Hody had amped himself with Energy Steroids.

After coating Sandai Kitetsu with Conqueror’s Haki, Zoro used it to wound King, a nearly invulnerable Lunarian. During the Egghead Incident, Zoro used Sandai Kitetsu to attack Saint V. Nusjuro, but the Elder blocked his strike. Zoro and Nusjuro then had an evenly matched clash, with the two unleashing Haki all around until they repelled each other.

14) Raiu

Shiryu wielding Raiu in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)

Raiu is a nodachi with a square-shaped hand guard and a slightly curved blade. Shiryu wields the sword and uses it to perform deadly attacks at extreme speed. Upon eating the Clear-Clear Fruit, Shiryu’s swift and efficient swordsmanship has become even more threatening, as he can now use Raiu while turning himself invisible.

The true extent of Shiryu’s strength is yet to be revealed, but it was stated that, even before adding the Clear-Clear Fruit to his arsenal, he was already as strong as Magellan, the owner of the fearful Venom-Venom Fruit, one of the most dangerous Devil Fruits in the entire series.

For Shiryu to match Magellan with Raiu alone, the former’s basic skills with this sword must be exceptional. Upon imbuing Raiu with Armament Haki, Shiryu was able to pierce Garp’s tough body, inflicting a nasty wound that left the Marine Hero significantly weakened.

13) Oto and Kogarashi

Shiki wielding Oto and Kogarashi in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)

“Golden Lion” Shiki, one of the most dangerous pirates of all time, wields the two double-edged swords, Oto and Kogarashi. Shiki used them to fight world-class opponents, such as the likes of Gol D. Roger, Monkey D. Garp, and Sengoku.

After suffering a crushing defeat at the hands of Garp and Sengoku, Shiki was jailed in Impel Down, but he chopped off his own legs to escape the prison. From then on, he attached Oto and Kogarashi to his body, and began using them as a sort of prosthesis to replace his severed legs.

12) Napoleon

Big Mom wielding Napoleon in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)
Big Mom wielding Napoleon in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)

Napoleon is a Homie created by Big Mom using the Soul-Soul Fruit and usually takes the form of a bicorne hat. Whenever it is necessary, however, it can become a giant sword. Big Mom can manipulate Napoleon at will, extending the blade or changing its shape to morph it into a cutlass, a longsword, or a gladius.

Regardless of its shape, Napoleon’s blade is extremely tough, as Big Mom can use it to match Kaido’s spiked club. After imbuing their respective weapons with the Color of Conqueror, Kaido and Big Mom clashed, generating an impact that split the heavens.

Swinging Napoleon to perform Ikoku Sovereignty, Big Mom unleashes a ravaging shockwave. If needed, she can join forces with Kaido to use Hakai, a tremendous combined attack. She can also cut and burn her foes at once by merging Napoleon’s blade with Prometheus’ flames, and even assemble them with Hera to unleash a concentrated beam of energy.

11) Nidai Kitetsu

Luffy wielding Nidai Kitetsu in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)
Luffy wielding Nidai Kitetsu in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)

Not much is known about the Nidai Kitetsu, but, as one of the 21 Great Grade Blades, there’s no doubt that this sword is among the One Piece world's most formidable weapons. The legendary swordsmith Kotetsu, an ancestor of the Kozuki Family, had carved the sword.

Like the other swords of the Kitetsu series, the Nidai Kitetsu is a cursed sword. Thus, an average fighter wouldn’t be strong enough to handle it. In terms of sharpness, durability, and overall craftsmanship, the Nidai Kitetsu should be inferior to the Shodai Kitetsu, but superior to the Sandai Kitetsu.

10) Wado Ichimonji

Zoro wielding Wado Ichimonji in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)

A creation of the master swordsmith Shimotsuki Kozaburo, Wado Ichimonji originally belonged to Zoro’s childhood rival and friend, Kuina. As she died prematurely, Zoro asked her father Koushiro for permission to carry the sword, a request to which the latter agreed. Since then, Wado Ichimonji has been Zoro’s most prized possession.

Wado Ichimonji is a high-quality weapon that stands out for its exceptional durability. Despite not even being enhanced with Haki, it managed to withstand the clash with Dracule Mihawk’s Yoru. Notably, it was the only one among Zoro’s three initial swords to do so. In Arabasta, Zoro used Wado Ichimonji to defeat Mr 1, cutting his steel body.

After the timeskip, Zoro used Haki to amp Wado Ichimonji and his other swords, making them durable enough to withstand Kaido and Big Mom’s Hakai, as well as sharp enough to wound Kaido badly. Nowadays, Zoro can coat Wado Ichimonji with the all-powerful Color of Conqueror, accessing to a whole new level of might.

9) Ame no Habakiri

Oden wielding Ame no Habakiri in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)
Oden wielding Ame no Habakiri in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)

A white katana with a golden trefoil-shaped hand guard, Ame no Habakiri was crafted by the legendary swordsmith Tenguyama Hitetsu. Along with Enma, it was one of Kozuki Oden’s signature swords. Ame no Habakiri is themed around the purity of heavens, in contrast to Enma, which recalls the darkness of hell.

Ame no Habakiri’s sharpness and power are outstanding. Using it together with Enma, Oden performed a Haki-enhanced X-shaped slash. This technique, called Paradise Totsuka, inflicted a critical injury on the nearly invulnerable Kaido, to the point where the latter was left with a massive permanent scar.

8) Yakuza Kasen

Fujitora wielding Yakuza Kasen in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)

Yakuza Kasen is the primary weapon of Marine Admiral Issho “Fujitora”, a blind swordsman who relies on his Observation Haki to fight effectively.

Yakuza Kasen is a shikomizue, a traditional Japanese sword, that was forged by Fugetsu Kisaburo, a swordsman native of Wano. It has a straight blade, and no real hand guard.

As one of the 12 Supreme Grade Blades, Yakuza Kasen ranks among the most powerful and valuable weapons in the world. Fujitora often uses it in conjunction with the powers of the Press-Press Fruit, which allow him to create and control gravitational forces. When not using it for combat, Fujitora employs Yakuza Kasen as a walking cane.

7) Enma

Zoro wielding Enma in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)
Zoro wielding Enma in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)

Wano’s master swordsmith Shimotsuki Kozaburo created the sword Enma. It typically tests its wielders by drawing out their Haki, which makes their attacks more powerful. However, if the user wasn’t strong enough, the sword would steal all their Haki, leaving them with no energy.

Oden used Enma alongside Ame no Habakiri to injure Kaido, leaving him with a scar. He could wield Enma flawlessly, despite the sword’s unique properties. After Oden’s death, his retainers, the Red Scabbards, considered Enma impossible to wield, despite being quite skilled Haki users in their own right.

Oden’s daughter, Hiyori, gifted Enma to Roronoa Zoro in exchange for him returning Shusui to Wano. Training with Enma, Zoro greatly increased his prowess with Armament Haki, making his attacks strong enough to seriously injure Kaido. Even Big Mom panicked at Zoro’s techniques, to the point where she warned Kaido to dodge them at all costs.

Zoro used Enma and his other swords to deeply cut Kaido, inflicting another scar on him. During the battle against King, Enma started stealing Zoro’s Haki. Realizing that it was a test, Zoro stopped holding himself back, and unleashed all of his Conqueror’s Haki to please Enma. Recently, Zoro has been using Enma effortlessly, which implies that he has now mastered the sword just like Oden.

6) Shodai Kitetsu

Nusjuro wielding Shodai Kitetsu in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)

Saint Ethanbaron V. Nusjuro, one of the Five Elders wields the Shodai Kitetsu, which was forged by the oldest generation of swordsmiths. The Shodai Kitetsu is the most powerful sword of the Kitetsu series. This weapon is one of the 12 Supreme Grade Blades, which says all about its potency and craftmanship.

During the Egghead Incident, Nusjuro showcased a glimpse of what he can do with this sword. He demonstrated the ability to perform super-precise slashes in quick succession, split apart Egghead’s laboratory with a single strike, and infuse his blade with a freezing aura.

Nusjuro then engaged in a thrilling Haki clash with Roronoa Zoro, which resulted in both of them being blown back. During their power struggle, Nusjuro and Zoro acknowledged each other as the wielder of a Kitetsu sword.

5) Murakumogiri

Whitebeard wielding Murakumogiri in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)
Whitebeard wielding Murakumogiri in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)

The signature weapon of the late Edward Newgate “Whitebeard”, Murakumogiri is one of the 12 Supreme Grade Blades. Unlike most of the others weapons in this class, Murakumogiri is not a sword, but a massive naginata. Granted, this still makes it a bladed weapon.

A worthy weapon for the “World’s Strongest Man”, Murakumogiri could withstand the insane power output of Whitebeard’s Conqueror’s Haki and Quake-Quake Fruit, allowing the latter to channel his full might without any repercussion.

Whitebeard used Murakumogiri to clash with Shanks and Roger’s Haoshoku-coated swords, with both parties unleashing enough power to part the heavens. He also used it against Akainu’s magma attacks, and Oden’s blades. Yet, neither Murakumogiri’s blade nor its pole showed any damage, further emphasizing the weapon’s impressive toughness.

4) Gryphon

Shanks wielding Gryphon in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)
Shanks wielding Gryphon in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)

Gryphon is a saber wielded with exceptional proficiency by Shanks, the captain of the Red Hair Pirates. With this sword, Shanks can easily block a direct hit from Akainu’s Mag-Mag Fruit without suffering any consequences.

Shanks can imbue Gryphon with Advanced Conqueror’s Haki, making it insanely powerful and durable. This emphasizes him as a formidable swordsman, perhaps second only to his former rival “Hawk Eyes” Mihawk.

Despite losing one arm several years before the present narration, Shanks remained strong enough to match Whitebeard equally. As the two Emperors clashed their Haki-amped weapons, the resulting collision released enough power to split the heavens.

As the beloved apprentice of Gol D. Roger, Shanks seemingly inherited the Pirate King’s fighting style. In fact, Shanks used Roger’s signature technique, Divine Departure, to defeat Eustass Kid. With a single strike of his Haoshoku-imbued sword, Shanks cut through Kid’s railgun, while knocking out the latter and his right-hand man Killer in the process.

3) Ace

Roger wielding Ace in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)

One of the 12 Supreme Grade Blades, Ace was a cutlass with a golden hand guard and a curved blade. It was the signature weapon of Gol D. Roger, the first man to conquer the entire Grand Line and find the One Piece treasure. A testament to his fondness for this sword, Roger named his son after it.

Coating Ace with the Color of Conqueror, Roger was able to unleash an incredible, almost unparalleled amount of power. This enabled him to fend off Whitebeard’s quake-amped blows and Monkey D. Garp’s punches without breaking or even cracking his sword.

A single strike of Roger’s Divine Departure technique, in which he imbued Ace with Haoshoku Haki and swung it horizontally, was enough to completely overpower a swordsman of Oden’s caliber. When Roger clashed his Ace against Whitebeard’s Murakumogiri, the surroundings were completely blown away, to the point where the heavens divided.

2) Shusui

Ryuma wielding Shusui (Image via E&H Production)
Ryuma wielding Shusui (Image via E&H Production)

Several centuries ago, the unparalleled “Sword God” Shimotsuki Ryuma used to wield a katana named Shusui. A samurai said to finish all his fights in a flash, Ryuma single-handedly protected Wano from pirates and World Nobles. For his exceptional prowess, Ryuma was also known as “King”, the strongest warrior in the world.

Ryuma was able to turn Shusui into a Black Blade, permanently coating it with his formidable Armament Haki. He died undefeated, and his sword became famous as the Land of Wano’s national treasure. During the Thriller Bark Arc, Zoro met and defeated Ryuma’s corpse, that Gecko Moria had reanimated. Of course, the zombie was much weaker than the original Ryuma.

Before fading forever, Ryuma offered Shusui to Zoro, believing that the sword would be pleased to serve under the man who had defeated its previous owner. Unknown to Zoro, Ryuma was his ancestor, which made this moment quite special in hindsight. After using Shusui for many battles, Zoro eventually returned it to Wano.

1) Yoru

Mihawk wielding Yoru in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)
Mihawk wielding Yoru in One Piece (Image via Toei Animation)

A massive single-edged sword, Yoru is stated to be the strongest blade of all. Unsurprisingly, it is the signature weapon of Dracule Mihawk, the World’s Strongest Swordsman. When Mihawk keeps it held on his back, Yoru resembles a crucifix.

Mihawk turned Yoru into a Black Blade, rendering the sword so tough that he can use it to channel his full power without worries. No one other than “Hawk Eyes” Mihawk is able to wield Yoru, which is telling of the former’s exceptional combat prowess.

As the World’s Strongest Swordsman, Mihawk’s full power must be astounding. With Yoru, even his most casual attacks are strong enough to easily cut in half mountain-sized icebergs. To this day, Mihawk has never been seen putting any real effort into a fight, meaning that he has only shown a glimpse of his capabilities.

With his fearsome Black Blade Yoru, “Hawk Eyes” awaits for Zoro at the top of the world, as the green-haired swordsman’s final and greatest opponent. This much-awaited fight has been set up since One Piece began, but the time to see it is drawing closer and closer.
