Jujutsu Kaisen barrier techniques: Ranking all five, from weakest to strongest
5) Curtains / Veils
Curtains, also known as Veils, are the first among the Jujutsu Kaisen barrier techniques introduced in the series. This commonly used technique creates a dome-shaped barrier that conceals anything inside from the outside view. It turns the sky within the barrier to night, luring cursed spirits out of hiding.
This makes Curtains a valuable tool for jujutsu sorcerers while exorcising curses, helping them maintain secrecy from the outside world. They can be customized with Binding Vows or commissioned onto others using talismans, as seen during the Shibuya Incident Arc.
However, Curtains are considered the weakest type of barrier, as their outer shell can be easily broken with enough force or by meeting specific conditions, such as destroying the talismans.
4) Domain Barriers
Barriers serve as the foundation for all Domains in Jujutsu Kaisen, including Domain Expansions, Domain Amplifications, and Simple Domains. Most Domain Expansions have enclosed, spherical outer shells, reinforced from the inside, with exceptions like Sukuna's Malevolent Shrine, which has open barriers.
These barriers create an artificial environment over real space, a challenging technique even for skilled sorcerers. Consequently, mastering barrier techniques is not only essential for casting powerful domains but also makes these domains difficult to break.
3) Empty Barriers
As the name suggests, Empty Barriers are almost entirely vacant within their boundaries. They feature hexagon-shaped panels on their edges, which a skilled barrier technique user can manipulate at will. Tengen, for example, created several Empty Barriers above the Tombs of the Star Corridor and could open or erase them as needed.
In Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 202, Kenjaku transformed one into a movie theater to reveal his plan to Choso during the confrontation with Tengen, Choso, and Yuki Tsukumo. Creating or manipulating such barriers requires a high level of skill and control, making them challenging to enter, exit, or modify.
2) Pure Barriers
Pure Barriers are considered superior to regular barriers due to their extensive coverage and foundational importance to jujutsu sorcerers. Tengen maintains several Pure Barriers across Japan. These barriers enhance the barrier techniques of Jujutsu High managers and help suppress cursed spirits.
There are four critical Pure Barriers: at the Imperial Palace, at the Tomb of the Star, at the Yamakuni Mausoleum in Kyoto, and the largest at the Holy Mountain of Hida, which divides Japan into east and west. Without these Pure Barriers, sorcerers would struggle significantly, relying on trial and error with an uncertain future in their efforts to manage cursed energy and spirits.
As such, this is considered the strongest barrier technique, serving a crucial purpose in the jujutsu world.
1) Bon Barriers
Despite Pure Barriers being regarded as the strongest among all barrier techniques, Bon Barriers are considered even more powerful. These barriers form the foundation of the Culling Game and are built upon Tengen's Pure Barriers, using them as the base. Each colony in the Culling Game is established on these Bon Barriers.
While Tengen had the option to release these barriers to stop the Culling Game, it would have come at the cost of sacrificing a thousand years of progress in the fight against curses.
