This tweet on X highlighted how a good portion of the community still wishes for the sequel to be part of Itachi Uchiha's genjutsu during his fight with Sasuke, allowing those in charge to remove it from the canon.

While this post by a Naruto fan was primarily comedic, it did bother a few people who enjoy Boruto and believe that the fandom "doesn't deserve anything good." The moment Naruto ended, with the Kaguya Otsutsuki twist, the redemption of Sasuke Uchiha, and the ships that were confirmed, it was a very divisive moment for the franchise, with Boruto being released shortly thereafter, adding salt to the injury. Almost a decade later, those feelings haven't changed that much, as fans of the sequel are annoyed with that portion of the fandom.

A good percentage of the fandom didn't like the direction of the sequel, the characterization of Naruto's son, the ever-increasing power scale, and how the legacy characters were treated. All of this has made it quite difficult for Boruto to have its own platform and stand on its own, but that hasn't stopped the series from having its supporters.
