Bleach TYBW part 3 episode 6 review: Exploring the adaptation and Pierrot Films' production
Pierrot Films' production for Bleach TYBW part 3 episode 6 was nothing short of spectacular. Under the direction of Shinchiro Ueda (the episode director), who also handled the storyboards, the episode covered the remainder of chapters 625 (Living Jaguar), 626 (The Holy Newborn), 627 (The Creation), and 628 (New World Orders).
Unlike previous episodes in this installment, Bleach TYBW part 3 episode 6 covered largely the source material without adding many anime original scenes. In fact, the episode didn't require such anime original moments. Rather, Pierrot Films improvised and lengthened some of the already existing moments from the manga, such as the scene where Yhwach creates his new empire in the Royal Palace.
At the same time, the episode included a few exchanges, especially once Gotei 13 and Ichigo enter the Royal Palace and observe how it has changed. Aside from faithfully adapting Tite Kubo's narrative, fans would agree that the episode had a compact pace.
Special mention goes to Masaki Hiramatsu (screenplay) and Shinichiro Ueda (direction and storyboard), who ensured that the episode's storyboard and screenplay aligned with the manga. Sometimes, it can be challenging to produce a dialogue-heavy episode, keeping in mind the fact that it doesn't bore the audience.
That's where Bleach TYBW part 3 episode 6 came up with a masterstroke. Earlier, Tite Kubo mentioned in many interviews with Jump that the production studio cut many of the manga's humorous moments to suit the war's vibe. However, the latest installment didn't follow the same. Rather, it kept the humor, which only brought back nostalgia for many fans.
From the onset, Bleach TYBW part 3 episode 6 witnessed Grimmjow engaging in a mild banter with Ichigo Kurosaki, provocating him for a fight. Suddenly, Nelliel jumped from Garganta and fell over Ichigo to hug him. The scene reminded fans of the countless interactions Ichigo and Nelliel had in the Arrancar saga.
Likewise, Grimmjow's introduction refreshed the memory of a past rivalry. It was truly nice to see that the sixth Espada survived his fatal wound from the Hueco Mundo arc. Grimmjow and Ichigo's interaction and Nelliel's humorous interference ensured the episode didn't become dialogue-heavy.
Eventually, the focus shifted to Riruka Dokugamine, who appeared alongside Yukio, a key member of the Xcution. Pierrot Films knew their assignment well, as it paid heavy attention to Riruka's production. One of the most beloved characters in the series, Riruka's return was on the cards, since the series had teased her appearance in the second installment.
However, the latest episode finally actualized it. Riruka's appearance enlivened the episode and brought a fresh breath of life. It was incredible how the studio could infuse tension and comic relief simultaneously. The humor-filled scenes involving Riruka, Grimmjow, and others ran concurrently with the foreboding scene of Yhwach creating his empire in the Royal Palace and the Gotei 13 constructing the gate to the Soul King's palace.
Yet, the humor didn't overpower the episode but acted as a palette cleanser. The heavy dialogue in the middle, with Yoruichi Shihoin telling Ichigo about why they asked Riruka and Yukio's help, was much needed, as it added to the complexity of the show's world-building.
It also showed how much Riruka and Yukio came in clutch to give them a chance for a counterattack. There's no doubt these old characters' return in the narrative lit up a fan's heart, who yearned to see them once again on the screen. Bleach TYBW part 3 episode 6 took fans back to the 2000s-2010s era, providing the same feeling.
Besides the nostalgic aspects, humor, and pacing, Bleach TYBW part 3 episode 6 was a pleasant surprise to the OST enthusiasts. The latest episode perhaps had the best music composition from Shiro Sagisu, who played the apt OSTs in the perfect situations. For example, as Yhwach described the Wahrwelt to his followers, the scene played the same OST that was played during the Auswahlen scene.
Likewise, the OSTs played when Yoruichi explained to Ichigo how Riruka carried the Valley of Screams to her box made the scene all the better. Besides the OST, the episode perhaps had the best character sketches in this installment thus far (the previous episode comes very close). A few single frames featuring Ichigo, Shunsui, Yhwach, and Jugram Hashwalth at the end looked straight from the manga, with incredible art quality.
The background art was excellent, as Pierrot Films paid heavy attention to the Wahrwelt's design and color schemes. Notably, the episode has finally come out of the red sky and saw a purple light scheme in Wahrwelt. So far, the studio has done a terrific job of nailing the vibe from the manga.
Bleach TYBW part 3 episode 6 review: Aspects that could've been better
Although Bleach TYBW part 3 episode 6 was brilliant, some moments could have been better. For instance, the episode casually revealed that Ichigo had known about the Valley of Screams. That fact indirectly confirmed that the Memories of Nobody movie was canon. However, Ichigo didn't elaborate much on it.
It would have been interesting if he had mentioned a few things about the Valley of Screams and its inner world. Tite Kubo's manga had shown a panel featuring the Valley of Screams. Pierrot Films decided to avoid that part. Besides that, the animation in the final moments appeared slightly jarring. That said, the background art and effects ensured it wasn't a glaring issue.
Conclusion
Bleach TYBW part 3 episode 6 was a fascinating installment, featuring everything a fan could want from the series. The episode not only evoked nostalgia with the return of many familiar characters but also stood out as one of the best episodes in terms of production.
Pierrot Films has truly given fans a movie-like experience with the latest episode. Since it largely focused on setting up the main battles, it remains to be seen how the studio will handle the upcoming installments.
