The previous episode ended with the revelation of Shura's mysterious disappearance. Blue Exorcist season 4 episode 3 shows Mephisto ordering Rin and Yukio to go find Shura. They are asked to visit Aomori, Shura's hometown and the last location picked up by the GPS on her phone.

Mephisto suspects that Shura may have run into trouble with the Illuminati as they've tightened their security following recent events. But Yukio questions the participation of Rin in the investigation and suggests that it would be easier to handle alone. However, Mephisto's body reminds him that it was not a request but an order.

He also asks Yukio about his involvement in dangerous training that would prove to be life-threatening. It is revealed that Mephisto acquired this information from his agent, who might be the one spying on Yukio as shown in the previous episode. Mephisto tells him to refrain from carrying out such reckless acts and come through with the mission in hand.

Rin and Yukio arrive at Aomori

Rin and Yukio arrive at a remote village in the Aomori prefecture and find out from a taxi driver who'd seen Shura that she was dropped off at Lake Towada. Since it was nighttime and snowing, they found lodging in a nearby inn amidst the freezing weather. They are welcomed by a short old lady who assures them that they're free to do whatever they want.

Further ahead in Blue Exorcist season 4 episode 3, Rin speaks his mind to Yukio about him and Shiemi. Yukio has been distant from Rin ever since he discovered the presence of demon powers in himself. Rin notices that Yukio has been hiding something important from him and reminds him that he can always depend on his brother.

The next morning, the old lady informs that she'd seen Shura after they showed her a picture. While Shura hadn't shared any of her objectives with the old lady, she did announce her arrival as a homecoming. Yukio checks into Shura's records and finds out she was taken in by the Order of Knights at the age of nine. The duo goes on to track down the place she was found eighteen years ago.

Meanwhile, the scene cuts to Shura at the Towada shrine where she meets the Dragon God, Hachiroto. The interaction reveals her ancestor's history with the spirit who offered her power in exchange for the service of all her descendants. The contract required all of her offspring to die by the age of 30 after giving birth to the next heir.

However, Shura refuses to bear a child and opposes Hachiroto who cuts her down. The Dragon God decides not to kill Shura as she may come of use to him and leaves for Rin and Yukio to find.
