Lightning's investigation in Blue Exorcist season 4 episode 7 leads him to the Southern Cross Boys Monastery, the residence of former exorcists of True Cross Academy. Nagatumo, Kyoto, and Misumi left the Academy after the Blue Night incident, raising Lightning's suspicion.

His mentioning of the Blue Night incident startled the three of them, but they were too afraid to reveal their secrets. This causes Lightning to use force to get the truth out of Mr.Misumi. Just as things got too heated, Ryuji reacts in time to stop Lightning from hurting Misumi.

Misumi decides to speak about the incident, as the secret has been eating away at him for years. He confesses that he worked at Section 13 on Elixirs. However, right after he mentions 'Elixirs,' Death appears behind him and ends Misumi's life. It resulted from him breaking the Morinath Contract, for which the penalty is death.

Asylum: True Cross Academy's Predecessor

Lightning and Ryuji go to see Mephisto and threaten him, suspecting his involvement with Section 13 and the Illuminati. Mephisto agrees to reveal the information he's been looking for and gives him a riddle, which gets them to the center of the Cram School at night.

Upon solving the riddle in Blue Exorcist season 4 episode 7, the duo is teleported to the Asylum, the Exorcist training School that existed before True Cross Academy. Mephisto had transported it to a separate dimension because the asylum was the origin of the Blue Night incident.

After going through its records, it comes to light that Sector 13 was involved in illegal human experimentation with a drug that rejuvenates life functions. They discover rooms filled with capsules used for cloning human bodies, whose sole purpose is to host the Demon Kings' souls.

The truth behind the Blue Night incident

They return to Mephisto's place, where he explains the history of those vessels and their connection to the Illuminati. Long before their existence, the 'Baal' or demon kings were conceptual beings. And with the development of human civilization, they began to take distinct forms, even gaining flesh and blood.

Since flesh doesn't last forever, Lucifer was displeased with this state of existence, taking his frustration out on humans. When it came to the point where he wanted to erase all existence, Mephisto proposed the idea of cloning bodies to survive, effectively pardoning the human race.

However, not all bodies were capable of being possessed, many often having separate souls of their own. This led to the experimentation on elixirs and immortality, which was how Amaimon acquired his body. Moreover, the strongest-enhanced human was born one day, but Lucifer did not possess the body.

Instead, it was the essence of Gehenna, the realm that birthed the Demons. In other words, it was Satan himself, the father of Rin and Yukio. Furthermore, the Blue Night happened on the day Satan acquired an ego, destroying the facility and killing almost everyone involved.
