With the release of Blue Lock chapter 272, the manga series established the power balance between Yoichi Isagi, Michael Kaiser, and Rin Itoshi. The three players were canceling each other out, forcing Isagi to look for a fourth player who wanted to become the match's protagonist.
The previous chapter revealed Rin Itoshi's past and how he derived the true nature behind his ego from a Boss Monster in a children's show. His ego wasn't based on destructive impulses but on life-risking destruction. Just then, Michael Kaiser arrived to steal the ball from Kaiser.

Blue Lock chapter 272: Isagi, Kaiser, and Rin get trapped in an infinite cycle
Blue Lock chapter 272, titled 'Rock, Paper, Scissors,' opened with Julian Loki describing the tendency for athletes to stick their tongues out when they were concentrating. However, Rin's tongue was stuck out a bit too much, making him look wild. Even Noel Noa noted the striker's true nature.
The chapter then switched to Rin Itoshi and Michael Kaiser's matchup as the German striker stalled Rin from making a move. Soon after, Isagi joined Kaiser in blocking Rin's path. During this, Blue Lock chapter 272 switched to Rin's monologue as he realized that his desire to bring out the best in his opponents to destroy them was an impulse derived from his deep-seated desire to destroy an amazing person.
In the past, the person who triggered this emotion in Rin was his brother, Sae. While he was not around for this match, Isagi and Kaiser were collectively able to bring forth Rin's desire. Hence, Rin decided to respond appropriately and get past the two players. However, Kaiser refused to move from his position, which is when Alexis Ness pressed Rin and got the ball away from him. At the time, Ness tried to get a sign of approval from Kaiser, but the striker no longer cared about him.
Unfortunately, the ball that Ness cleared happened to drop to Charles Chevalier, who immediately wished to make a long pass to Ryusei Shidou. Just then, Blue Lock chapter 272 switched to Kaiser's monologue. He realized that Rin was Blue Lock's No.1 and Yoichi was the close second who adapted himself to defeat Rin. With that, it was clear to Kaiser that the two players were the center of Blue Lock. Hence, he wished to steal the protagonist's seat that they created.
With this determination, Michael Kaiser blocked Charles' pass to Shidou with a header. Immediately, Blue Lock chapter 272 switched to Yoichi Isagi's monologue. He realized that the current state of the field had pitted all three strikers — Isagi, Kaiser, and Rin — in a deadlock as each of them was set to keep getting crushed by the other in an infinite cycle. The only way to break out of this was if another player were to make a big move and help them break the deadlock.
