With the release of Blue Lock chapter 288, the manga featured Noel Noa making a defining substitution, replacing Igarashi Gurimu with Yukimiya Kenyu. As fans may have noticed, the change effectively added an extra attacker into the mix, bolstering Bastard Munchen's attack.

In the previous chapter, Ryusei Shidou teamed up with Rin Itoshi. While Igaguri tried stopping this attack, he failed and ended up fouling Shidou. Fortunately, Isagi and Kaiser managed to stop this attack with their block and tackle combination. As for Igaguri, he received a booking and was asked to sub out.

Blue Lock chapter 288, titled Death Game, picked up from where the previous chapter ended as Yoichi Isagi walked away from Igarashi Gurimu after consoling him. As for the fullback, he could not stop his tears. Nevertheless, he had to leave the pitch as Master Striker Noel Noa had picked his replacement.

Subbing in for Igarashi was none other than Yukimiya Kenyu. However, unlike his previous appearances as a left-back, Noel Noa asked him to play as a left midfielder. This change saw Hiori Yo take up the right back spot left vacant by Igarashi.

Just as Yukimiya stepped onto the field, Yoichi Isagi began analyzing what this substitution meant. With him on the field, the breakthrough power on the left side was about to explode. Instead of adding a defender, Noel Noa added an offensive player. This was an effective order from the Master Striker to end the game as soon as possible. Even Isagi agreed with the plan as he wanted no outcome other than victory.

Right after, Blue Lock chapter 288 saw Gagamaru Gin resume the match with a goal-kick pass to Yukimiya Kenyu. He controlled the ball and initiated an attack alongside the team's two aces, Yoichi Isagi and Michael Kaiser. This trio created a rational destructive attack by making use of Yukimiya's dribbling skills along with Isagi's and Kaiser's quick and logical thinking.

Tabito Karasu was left astonished by the attack, as Yukimiya's presence effectively increased the number of troublesome opponents. His dribbling allowed him to get out of a pinch anywhere while the entire Bastard Munchen team coordinated with him. Consequently, Karasu used his Meta Vision to find a way to hunt him down.

The defensive midfielder coordinated with Isagi, hoping to intercept a pass from Yukimiya. However, Yukimiya never released the ball and instead used Isagi as bait to explode past Karasu. Isagi was pleased with this development, as Yukimiya's actions made his desire to shine very evident.

As fans may have noticed, Blue Lock chapter 288 was only eight pages long. This was due to manga artist Yusuke Nomura's sudden illness, which forced him to shorten the manga chapter. The remainder of the chapter would be released in the magazine's next issue.
