Blue Lock aired its season 2 finale over the weekend and Studio 8Bit delivered stellar animation and direction for the climax of the team's match against Japan's Under-20s. While that was a great moment for fans of the series, they also had to defend their favorite series because of the claims that no high school-level match should be "that serious."

That comment stems from Blue Lock's over-the-top nature, exemplified in the finale with Rin Itoshi's "flow" and how he seems to behave in an almost zombie-like state. However, fans stated that this match was truly important since the main cast was risking its chances of ever playing professional football, which ups the ante of the game.

Blue Lock fans defend their favorite series after claims that a match like this shouldn't be "that serious"

The season 2 finale culminated in the protagonist, Yoichi Isagi, scoring the last-minute goal for his team to defeat Japan's Under-20s spectacularly after all the criticism Studio 8Bit received because of the animation. However, it was Rin Itoshi's "flow" moment that went viral online, with people claiming that high school-level football shouldn't be "that serious".

This is a criticism that the series has received throughout the years, with a lot of viewers claiming that the story moves far away from what football usually is. Others say that it seems to have more battle shonen elements rather than the true nature of sports. Moments such as Rin's mental breakdown or Shidou Ryusei's comments about fertilization are two of the best examples of that trend in the series.

Some fans highlighted that this match was going to determine if Yoichi Isagi, Rin Itoshi, and the rest of the project would continue with the chance of playing professional football or not. If they had lost, they would have been banned from ever reaching that level in the sport, which does justify a bit how they were so committed to winning.

More reactions online

It is also worth pointing out that the series has never meant to be an honest and realistic representation of football. To some fans, this is clear as the premise mainly centered around strikers and no other positions.

The project that Ego Jinpachi has established in the story doesn't really follow the typical path of a professional footballer, which is another element that needs to be taken into account.

Rin Itoshi's reaction is not only due to his bad relationship with his brother, Sae Itoshi, and his jealousy of people like Yoichi Isagi. It is also a testament to how much the players want to win in this series. It is certainly not for everybody and might be one of the story's most divisive elements, but it also serves to highlight how much this means for the main characters of the anime.

"people saying it's not serious don't know anything about sports and passion in it," someone said.
"anyone saying it's not serious have never played a sport in thier life," another person said.
"yeah, it wasn’t even just individual stakes like usual. the entire blue lock programme was gonna be shut down if they lost this game," someone else said.

All in all, it was a great moment for the Blue Lock franchise and also highlights, once again, what makes this series so unique to so many people.
