Luffy's relationships with other One Piece characters are always complicated, with him not remembering the names of others the first time. The prime example of this are Yamato, whom Luffy still calls Yamao, Trafalgar Law, whom he calls Torao, and many other characters, including the ones whom the protagonist is close with.

However, there is one character who broke this tradition—Jewelry Bonney. During the Egghead arc, Luffy's group and Bonney were making their way to the island after getting swept away from the crew. That's when the Straw Hat Pirate mispronounced Bonney's name. After she angrily repeated her name, Luffy never mispronounced her name.

Why Bonney might always be special when compared to other One Piece characters?

In One Piece episode 1091, after the Straw Hat Pirates were distributed because Bonney needed help, Luffy's group was stranded on the bay of Egghead island with Jewelry Bonney.

After changing their clothes into something dry, Luffy's group and Bonney ventured to the island to look for a way to enter the city. During their walk, Luffy called cyborgs cool after Bonney told them about her father. As the female pirate didn't like it, Luffy apologized to her but called her 'Bogey.'

Bonney, very angrily, repeated her name before the Straw Hat. In response, Luffy apologized with the right pronunciation of her name. After this incident, the Straw Hat Pirate always called the female pirate by her real name, which is unbecoming of him.

Luffy only uses real names for his close friends (like his crew) or family. However, for One Piece characters, he normally chooses nicknames like Torao (Trafalgar Law), Jaggy (Eustass Kidd), Yamao (Yamato), Pigeon Guy (Rob Lucci), Hammock (Boa Hancock), and so many others. So, this makes Bonney the part of a special club.

Clarification from the author

In the SBS section of One Piece volume 107, Eiichiro Oda was asked the question of whether Luffy calling Bonney by her real name meant anything. The author stated that Luffy regretted calling Bonney's father's suffering cool, so he immediately corrected himself and never made the same mistake.

Although this does indicate that there isn't something special about the female character, the One Piece characters whom the Straw Hat refers to with their name are speculated to become part of the crew in the future. As the series has yet to see the Straw Hat Pirates depart from Bonney, there is no telling what the future holds.

Final thoughts

Nefartari Vivi was also one of the few One Piece characters whom Luffy called by her real name and she was also close to joining the Straw Hat Pirates. However, as the fandom can already see, she decided to stay at Arabasta Kingdom because she was next in line to rule her kingdom.

Bonney, on the other hand, doesn't seem to have such responsibilities. The best she could do after all the mess is settle and take care of her father (if Kuma makes it out alive). So, there is no telling whether she could become a part of the Straw Hat Pirates.
