With the release of Dandadan episode 9, the anime finally saw Science Saru adapt Okarun and Momo's controversial scene from the manga. Fans believed that the animation studio might refrain from producing the scene or find a way around it. However, the staff chose to stay true to the source material and animated it just as depicted in the manga.
As expected, the moment raised a few eyebrows, as fans could not believe such a scene was cleared to air on television and streaming services worldwide. Surprisingly, it did not face the outcry that fans anticipated. Instead, many found humor in it and even labeled it "peak" for its comedic depiction.
This did not sit well with the Boruto fans, who called out the hypocrisy within the anime community for approving Okarun and Momo's controversial scene while criticizing Sarada's design in Boruto: Two Blue Vortex.
Why are Boruto fans rattled by the anime community's approval of controversial Dandadan scene?
As fans might recall, when Sarada Uchiha's outfit for the Boruto: Two Blue Vortex manga was revealed, it received some backlash. Fans of other anime felt that the outfit was suited for a Kunoichi and suggested that manga artist Mikio Ikemoto had merely used the excuse of a time skip to change the character's outfit into something suggestive.
While this may sound absurd, it was not the first time Ikemoto's artwork faced scrutiny. He had encountered similar allegations regarding his cover artworks in the pre-time skip as well.
Even if that were the case, it does not answer why the anime community did not treat Dandadan similarly. As seen in the anime, the controversial scene depicted Okarun lying on top of Momo in a vulnerable way. Right after, they were shown running through the corridor, embarrassed, trying to get away from others.
While the scene was depicted comedically, the truth remains that both characters are high schoolers, yet the anime did not receive any backlash close to what Ikemoto faced. Boruto fans were seemingly frustrated by this hypocrisy and called it out.
How fans reacted to the controversy
With the anime community not calling out Dandadan for its controversial scene, most Boruto fans were certain that other fanbases were biased against the Kishimoto-Ikemoto series.
Surprisingly, even some Dandadan fans agreed with the Boruto fans, as they could see the hypocrisy within the anime community. Sarada's outfit was slightly suggestive at best. However, the scene from Dandadan was on a whole other level.
"Just plain hypocrisy," one fan said.
"I wanna argue with you since I like dandadan but got a solid point," another fan added.
Nothing against Boruto but Ikemoto famously has been drawing Sarada in a weird way...Meanwhile Momo's are all just how girls tend to dress, another fan argued.
I mean Jiraya literally Told Naruto That he will teach him Rasengan if he transformed into his girl form, other fan said.
However, many fans clapped back at the Boruto fans, stating that they had called out Ikemoto's design because he was famously known for drawing Sarada in a weird way. As for Dandadan, the controversial scene was just for comedic purposes. Additionally, Momo's outfits reflected how girls interested in fashion tend to dress.
Another fan pointed out that if the Naruto-Boruto fans were truly bothered by Dandadan's controversial scene, they might have also called out Naruto's use of "Oiroke no Jutsu" in the original series. However, that was never the case, as it too was made for comedic purposes.
