Boruto: Naruto Next Generations anime series had a very promising start with the mixed-filler-canon arc that was animated well. However, with the continuous shift to pure filler content, the anime lost its steam pretty soon, and fans started to drop it.

Even though, despite a few animation clips, the series kept its animation standards high for the much-awaited moments and fights and ended before adapting the full manga series, leaving fans anticipating the return of the anime.

The sales report for 2024 shared by the X user (@UzuRepo) might have reignited the hopes of the Naruto Next Generations anime fans. The series ranked number 2 in the Financial Report for the Full Fiscal Year, surpassing Bleach and Pokémon in the top 5 rankings.

Boruto anime ranked number 2 in the Financial Report for the Full Fiscal Year

The X user shared TV Tokyo's Financial Report for the Full Fiscal Year as of March 2024 (three months of 2024). The report consisted of states combining the sales of anime series' Blu-ray & DVD sets, their merchandise, and everything else related to their names (rights business).

The total sales, as stated by the X user, for this year were 20,971 million yen, with the majority of the sales, 82.6%, emerging from overseas (17,321 million yen), and sales emerging from Japan were 3,650 million yen (17.%).

North America contributed the most to these sales, with a percentage of 29.4%. The anime series that was the most successful, according to TV Tokyo's Financial Report for the Full Fiscal Year for March 2024, were:

  1. Naruto
  2. Boruto
  3. Yu-Gi-Oh!
  4. Pokémon
  5. Bleach

The X user also revealed information about other series that weren't included in the top 5: Spy x Family series' distribution and Black Clover Game (Rise of the Wizard King) sales increased substantially both in Japan and overseas. Moreover, Naruto was declared to be performing well overseas.

While there are other shocking series in the top 5 anime series, fans loved the fact that the Boruto anime made it so far on the list. The series is animated by Studio Pierrot (the same studio as its prequel, Naruto) and has 293 episodes.

The anime concluded on March 26, 2023, with no announcement of its sequel as of this article's publication. But with the anime series having such high ratings, fans are hoping that they could get to see a sequel pretty soon in the future.

As expected, the fans of the Naruto Next Generations anime started to compare their series to the others that couldn't cross their favorites, one of which was Bleach. Bleach returned after almost ten years in 2022 with the adaptation of its final arc, the Thousand Year Blood War.

The list this tweet showed could be for the original Bleach series that aired 10 years ago, as it didn't state that it was from the latest adaptation. Moreover, a big part of the fandom awaited the arrival of the anime adaptation of the sequel series of Naruto Next Generations, Two Blue Vortex.

"Boruto owns Bleach," a fan claimed.
"Damn bleach really got owned by demon slayer now boruto?" another fan said.
"Waiting for peak release ...tv tokyo after releasing two blue vortex," another one said.

On the other hand, fans were confused as to why the other anime series was so low on the list, especially Bleach and Black Clover. The latter series ended in 2021, and its latest sequel was released in 2023, which was a movie.

As mentioned earlier, the reason behind Bleach being so low on the list could be because its stats are for the old anime, not the new one. Moreover, Black Clover couldn't make it on the list because it ended in 2023 and its game was the only source of earnings in 2024.

Lastly, one fan stated that the reason the Naruto Next Generation series scored this high in the stats was because of Naruto and even claimed that the former anime could have been canceled if it wasn't for the latter series.

"This makes no sense, why is bleach at bottom," a fan stated.
"I don't see black clover anywhere," another one stated.
"BURRITO being carried by Naruto. Otherwise it would have been cancelled lmao," another fan stated.

Final thoughts

The overall sales of an anime play a vital role in its getting a sequel adaptation. After almost a year's worth of time, Naruto Next Generations anime series has still not received an anime series, even though it enjoyed good sales in 2024.

This could be because Studio Pierrot, the animation studio for Boruto, is busy with other highly anticipated anime projects like Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War Part 3.
