Boruto, being a Naruto sequel, takes a lot of inspiration and concepts from the original series, but one that is extremely prevalent is the character dynamics between the protagonist and Kawaki. A lot of fans have compared this relationship to the one Sasuke and Naruto had in the original story, which is something that author Masashi Kishimoto has confirmed in interviews.
It is fair to say that Boruto and Kawaki do mirror Naruto and Sasuke in terms of character designs and their personalities during most of the story, but Kishimoto has emphasized that the similarities are due to the context caused by Eida's Omnipotence. It is through that ability that these two characters' roles in the story's universe are reversed, which is something that Naruto points out in the original series regarding the Uchiha.

Explaining how Boruto and Kawaki mirror Naruto and Sasuke in a very unique manner
Naruto mentions throughout the original series that Sasuke Uchiha and him have had similar upbringings, dealing with being orphans and oftentimes not fitting in with the rest because of it. In that regard, the iconic main character also mentioned several times that, if some things were different, perhaps they would have switched sides, explaining the similarities in their personalities and motivations.
This is something that author Masashi Kishimoto explained in interviews that was very important for the relationship of Naruto's son with Kawaki in the sequel. Due to Eida's Omnipotence ability, these two characters switched sides in everyone's memories, and now the protagonist is treated as an outlaw while Kawaki takes his place, as seen in the Two Blue Vortex time skip.
It is fair to say that Masashi Kishimoto took a much more literal approach to this metaphor when compared to the original duo, but this does show that he had a vision of sorts for the sequel. Furthermore, this element played out by Eida's Omnipotence is a major core aspect of the series, as of this writing.
The current state of the series
It is fair to say that Boruto Two Blue Vortex has been a major boost of energy and excitement for the fandom, especially when it comes to the vast majority of plot points that the series is currently addressing. A major aspect, for example, is how Naruto and Hinata have been sealed by Kawaki, with the protagonist trying to find his parents while being prosecuted by the people of the Hidden Leaf Village.
There is the current threat of the Shinju clones made out of the Ten-Tails' chakra, with the likes of Jura and Hidari displaying their power against Konoha. Furthermore, there is still the issue of what is going to happen to Sasuke Uchiha and other mysteries, such as Code's role in the story and the enigmatic figure that is Shibai Otsutsuki.
Final thoughts
The combination of the protagonist and Kawaki has played a pivotal role in the story, which has proven to be a direct mirror to the one Naruto and Sasuke. In that regard, it shows what could have happened if those two iconic characters had switched sides, as was discussed in the original series.
