The Boruto databooks have officially confirmed the name and powers of Kawaki's Dojutsu, which was one of the most prominent questions that a lot of fans had. It also gives a bit more context to the way he captured Naruto and Hinata prior to the events of the Two Blue Vortex timeskip, and how the nature of this ability works to his benefit.

There is also the chance that this isn't the full form of Kawaki's Dojutsu, as the character's full potential has not been developed in Boruto. In that regard, that could mean that the Dojutsu in question is only a sample of how far Kawaki can go in the series, and it is likely that is something that the coming chapters of the manga are going to address at some point.

Explaining the name of Kawaki's Dojutsu and how it works in the Boruto series

It has been confirmed through the databooks of the series that the name of Kawaki's Dojutsu is Kokugan, which translates to "Black Eye". That name makes sense when considering the design of this Dojutsu and also fits with the theme of the character being the "dark side of the moon", although is fair to say that the last point has been an interpretation of the fandom in recent years.

One of the abilities that Kawaki can use with the Kokugan is the Sukunahikona, which allows him to shrink non-living matter or himself and return to normal size. However, the most prominent ability at his disposal is that of the Daikokuten, which is the power to store objects in a pocket dimension. That is how he managed to capture Naruto and Hinata in the series.

There is a strong argument to be made that the full extent of Kawaki's Dojutsu has not been explored since the Kokugan originally belonged to Isshiki, which means that there could be more room to grow for the character at the moment. However, this is just mere fan speculation and the story has not hinted at that thus far in the timeskip.

The role Kawaki plays in the series

Kawaki and Boruto are two of the main driving forces of the series, and that has become a lot more prominent after the timeskip. Kawaki's actions, supported by Eida's Omnipotence, are something that has defined the series moving forward. There is a strong argument to be made that the entire manga changed from the moment they switched places.

Both characters started as brothers since Naruto adopted Kawaki as his son but things only escalated as the series progressed. However, once Eida started her Omnipotence, they switched places, thus cementing Kawaki as a much more morally dubious character, and someone who could have a redemption arc or fully go down the villain route.

Final thoughts

Now that the Boruto databook has confirmed that Kawaki's Dojutsu is named Kokugan, that is something that adds a bit more context to his abilities. However, there is also the possibility that he could further develop the Kokugan moving forward in the manga.
