Boruto's compatibility as an Otsutsuki vessel makes perfect sense and was set up in Naruto's closing events

The Boruto series marked the actual introduction of the Otsutsuki and revealed their peculiar method of reincarnation. Although many fans might think that Naruto's son being possessed by Momoshiki is an unnecessary attempt at imitating Naruto's condition with Kurama, this plot point might have been hinted at during the Naruto series itself.

The origins of the shinobi descended from Hagoromo and the lineage of Naruto's son through both Asura and Hamura suggest deeper connections. Even the inheritance of Tailed Beast Chakra adds another layer to the plot point of Otsutsuki possession.

Boruto is the closest being to an Otsutsuki due to his lineage

The narrative of Boruto has hugely emphasized the significance of the Otsutsuki and their vessels. While the Otsutsuki taking possession of their vessels was introduced in the Naruto's successor series, the entire foundation for Naruto's son becoming the “perfect vessel” for Momoshiki Otsutsuki was laid in the Naruto series.

The latter part of the Naruto series was spent revealing the origins of the shinobi, which was revealed to be descended from Hagoromo, whose children Asura and Indra started the Senju and the Uchiha clan. At the same time, Hamura’s descendants founded the Hyuuga clan. Along with the Senju, the Uzumaki clan was also a part of Asura’s lineage.

Naruto was later revealed to be one of the last few survivors of the Uzumaki clan and the reincarnation of Asura. This essentially made it so that Naruto's descendants (Boruto) possessed chakra that could be traced back to Hagoromo via Naruto’s lineage. But he also received traces of Hamura’s chakra via Hinata, who was blessed with Hamura’s chakra during the “The Last” movie.

While many might think that these hold no significance due to the huge inflation in power level shown in Naruto's successor series, it should be noted that Naruto's son also inherited Tailed Beast Chakra from his father, which is confirmed due to the whiskers present on him, Naruto and Himawari.

The tailed beast's chakra was essentially chakra that was split away from a Ten Tails during Hagoromo’s era. The ten tails serve as an evolutionary step for the Otsutsuki, which progresses with the Otsutsuki clan members eating a chakra fruit to gain more power.

This essentially means that Boruto's chakra and genetic makeup are much closer to that of an Otsutsuki than anyone in the series. Since Naruto's son is essentially the human closest to being an Otsutsuki, it is no wonder that his compatibility to be an Otsutsuki vessel has been emphasized so much. This further proves that the plotline regarding Naruto's son becoming an Otsutsuki vessel was in the works throughout the Naruto series.

The actual reasoning and specifications behind the Otsutsuki possession haven't yet been revealed. Still, they may be disclosed in future chapters, especially since the plot has been focusing on the Ten-Tails and Otsutsuki.
