Boruto is currently going through its biggest arc thus far in the manga and a major reason for that is Eida's Omnipotence ability, which led to the protagonist and Kawaki switching lives.
This event has become a major plot point in the series, likely shaping its conclusion. Looking back, Kawaki's early interactions with Eida in the Boruto manga subtly foreshadowed the reveal of Omnipotence. These moments reveal Kawaki's true feelings about himself and Eida's desire to help him, setting up the series' first major plot twist.

Omnipotence was foreshadowed in a very peculiar way in Boruto
Kawaki might display a tough exterior during most of the series but a major part of his character is his self-loathing since he doesn't have a clear origin or a place to belong to. He deems himself as worthless in some of the conversations that he has with Eida, highlighting that he doesn't matter, which could be viewed as one of the seeds of what would eventually be Omnipotence.
Kawaki's acceptance as Naruto Uzumaki's adopted son profoundly shaped his character, motivating him to use Omnipotence with Eida. He aimed to switch places with the protagonist, seeking a life he believed was better. Yet, Naruto's biological son finds support from Sasuke, Sarada, and even Himawari, who doubt the memories Omnipotence altered. This shows that Omnipotence can’t change genuine feelings, underscoring that Kawaki can’t escape his true self.
The importance of Kawaki in the story
There is no denying that Kawaki is one of the most important characters in Boruto and his relationship with the protagonist is a pivotal element of the story. It is through their rivalry that the events of Omnipotence begin to take form and also manage to draw a comparison between the two of them, especially when it comes to reacting to adversity.
Moreover, a major aspect moving forward with Kawaki is that he is a very flexible character, with him being able to serve as a foil to the protagonist but also an ally when it comes to dealing with the Shinju clones, as evidenced by recent chapters of the manga. Therefore, there is a feeling that he could end up as an ally and be redeemed or have a tragic fall that could turn him into a major antagonist.
Final thoughts
The use of Omnipotence is also a reflection of Kawaki's most honest desires and the real feelings he has regarding his existence. At his core, he truly hates himself, which is why this plot twist serves as a way to showcase what he really wants and how he doesn't mind walking over Boruto if it means getting his goal.
