As mentioned, Boruto: Two Blue Vortex chapter 16 showcased an interesting but concerning side to Sumire's character. Amidst talk of Boruto and his reasons for doing what he is doing, Sumire's true feelings for the blonde came to light. She stopped Sarada Uchiha's questions and said Boruto had his own way of doing things, which kept him safe.

In the process, she also displayed a little displeasure at Sarada blatantly hugging the blonde when he met the girls. This was a clear sign that Sumire harbored something deeper for him. Moreover, her words in Boruto: Two Blue Vortex chapter 16 point to her wanting to understand him and help him in any way to combat the Shinju's looming threat.

This is where a recently surfaced theory on Reddit steps in. It speculates that Sumire might be next in line to become a Shinju. The theory labels Sumire's "outburst" as a revelation of her true emotions, which hold a dark undertone. At the moment, Sarada and Eida stand in her way — the former being her romantic rival, while Eida knows about Omnipotence and the altered present.

Hence, to reach Boruto, she will need to annihilate the pair. Moreover, she has reason to do so, given her tragic past coupled with her intense Anbu training to suppress her emotions. Sarada hugging Boruto might have tugged on her strings a little too hard. Thus, in search of a means to best the Uchiha girl, she might be compelled to avail of the Divine Trees' powers to achieve her goal, i.e., Boruto.

While this theory can make sense when read objectively, from the story's point of view, it is improbable. To begin with, the theory doesn't specify "how" it will all happen. The Shinju don't typically seek out opponents to turn into living Divine Trees; they only do so with powerful shinobi. Moreover, even if Sumire were to find them, she would be sealed in a tree while her Shinju would run amuck.

Next, it is unlikely that Sumire will turn to the dark side for a second time. Her time at the other end finished early in the story. Interestingly, it was Boruto himself whose support and encouragement changed her. So, repetition of the same cycle is unlikely. Hence, one of the ways she could power up would be to redevelop the Gozu Tenno, considering that Boruto: Two Blue Vortex allows for jutsu/power creation.

Finally, the events of Boruto: Two Blue Vortex chapter 16 tease Sumire being in line for a more important future role rather than turning evil. So far, she has been in the background, not contributing much to the story. But, given her dynamic with Boruto and now Sarada, she will likely evolve to be more crucial in the coming developments of the story.

Sumire’s depiction in Boruto: Two Blue Vortex chapter 16 ignites compelling possibilities for her role in the story’s unfolding drama. Her complex emotions and budding rivalries layer her character, suggesting something transformative ahead. The theory about her becoming the next Shinju might be intriguing, but it seems quite unlikely considering the overall narrative.

Rather, Sumire might be stepping into a pivotal role transcending personal rivalries and/or emotional conflicts. Her potential development rests within her unique perspective and relationship with Boruto. Thus, she takes a stance as an essential ally in navigating the series' growing tensions. But whether she directs her turmoil towards growth or gives in to darker impulses remains vague.
