Chainsaw Man chapter 171 was expected to continue expanding on Control Devil Nayuta’s current status, and whether or not she was dead as fans saw in the last issue. Officially released on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, the issue instead focused on the fallout of this shocking reveal as it relates to Denji specifically.

Likewise, Chainsaw Man chapter 171 saw the mortified young man become incredibly aggressive towards Barem Bridge, eventually seemingly killing him. This prompts a transformation into his Hero of Hell form, which is seemingly set to take on a new Special Division of Public Safety in the coming weeks.

Chainsaw Man chapter 171 opened up with Denji continuing to stare at Control Devil Nayuta’s severed head, clearly in shock and disbelief at what he’s seeing. He says her name as Asa Mitaka, Haruka Iseumi, and Nobana Higashiyama all look at him and the head in disbelief. A stoic Barem grabs another piece of sushi off the conveyor belt, saying this is downright cruel of him while apologizing.

However, he then justifies his actions by saying there’s no way around it and that it’s all to save the world. As he goes to eat the sushi, Denji stands up and grabs him by the throat as his entrails begin to pop out of his stomach. Asa Mitaka is horrified to watch as they wrap around Denji’s neck and tighten, while Denji squeezes Barem’s neck so hard it becomes almost devilish as his head snaps and falls to the floor.

Chainsaw Man chapter 171 sees Asa Mitaka’s body taken over by War Devil Yoru as this happens, who is just as shocked. As Barem’s body hits the ground, Denji fully manifests into the Hero of Hell form, standing over Barem’s headless corpse and staring at it. He then looks up at people running to leave the restaurant, while someone confirms their target sighted in the form of “eyeless black Chainsaw Man.”

This person then orders Devil Extermination Division 1 Team A and Devil Extermination Division 2 Team B to commence action, adding that Special Division 5 has arrived. This person is then revealed to be a Public Safety agent, presumably a Division leader as he speaks about this being “the Special Division’s big debut.”

Chainsaw Man chapter 171 visually introduces the fiends who make up Special Division 5. As the Division leader discusses how their performance today will dictate their fate (as was once the case for Denji and Power), two fiends are introduced. One of them has wrinkly skin, a face with no eyes, and horns growing out of the head. Another has dark skin, black sclera, what appear to be white irises, and piercings along the right side of their face.

The Division leader then reveals that their goal is to damage Chainsaw Man however they can, and that it’s fine if they can’t kill him. He emphasizes that if they keep him from leaving Sushishi and the area, he’ll personally treat them to as much booze and sushi as they want. Three more Fiends are introduced here, one of whom looks like a normal human girl with a spiky hat. Another has his skin warped and is missing eyes and a nose, but has two giant ears.

The third and final one introduced here looks like a completely normal human on one side of their face but has what appears to be a dinosaur or crocodile/alligator growing out of the other half. Chainsaw Man chapter 171 sees the group united on a rooftop together, with the leader commencing the operation as they move out. However, the issue ends with the hilarious reveal that Denji is already behind them and waiting to attack in his Hero of Hell form.

While there’s not much to discuss from this latest issue for the series, fans can at least look forward to some action in the coming weeks given these events. Special Division 5 will likely be dealt with fairly quickly and should serve to set up Hero of Hell Chainsaw Man versus War Devil Yoru primarily. Likewise, fans can expect the next installment to either start or all but start this fight, which Yoru is seemingly also ready for given her appearance in chapter 171.
