Heading into Chainsaw Man chapter 172’s official release earlier this week, fans had a general idea of what to expect from the issue considering Pochita’s return in his Hero of Hell form. However, fans didn’t expect Pochita to eat the Ear Devil, erasing the Ear Devil itself and the concept of ears from existence as a result.

This impact was made immediately clear in the issue’s final pages, where War Devil Yoru and Katana Man could not communicate with each other due to both missing their ears. Likewise, fans began discussing the series’ future after Chainsaw Man chapter 172, with many believing that series author and illustrator Tatsuki Fujimoto will find a way to “undo” this development.

In fact, the series may have already set up how ears as a concept can be rescued from Pochita’s stomach long before Chainsaw Man chapter 172’s release. This setup also suggests that fans will soon see War Devil Yoru make good on her promise at the start of part 2, which is to force Chainsaw Man to vomit nuclear weapons back up.

Chainsaw Man chapter 172 can fix its ear problem and see Yoru fulfill her promise in one fell swoop

At the start of the manga’s second part, War Devil Yoru declared her intention to fight Chainsaw Man and have him somehow vomit nuclear weapons back up. She doesn’t mean actual nuclear weapons here, but instead whichever Devil represented them as a concept. Flash forward to Chainsaw Man chapter 172, and this seems like the most likely way for the concept of ears to return to the series.

Moreover, it seems likely that Yoru will be the one to fight Pochita and force the Hero of Hell to vomit ears back up. Yoru’s desire to fight Pochita has been well established, and she did intend to after they ate some sushi and Denji was in a fighting mood.

Her smirk at the end of chapter 172 further supports this, seemingly showing her recognizing the opportunity before her and preparing to take it. However, Yoru won’t just stop at ears, and will likely try and make good on her promise of having Pochita vomit nuclear weapons back up.

This is further supported by the fact that Fujimoto reasonably can’t remove ears and verbal communication from the series beyond Chainsaw Man chapter 172’s events. Chapter 172 highlights the issue in doing so via Yoru and Katana Man’s aforementioned interaction. With the two clearly being established as unable to hear each other or speak without ears, it’s obvious that something will happen that sees ears returning as a concept.

Given that, it’s the perfect opportunity to also have Yoru make good on her promise. This would also answer several questions regarding Pochita’s ability to erase things from existence, such as whether or not it’s reversible if people suddenly remember the returning concepts and more. There’s also the fact that Pochita needs to be stopped for Denji to return, further suggesting that Yoru will fight Pochita here and be victorious in terms of reviving ears and nuclear weapons.

However, this is all speculative as of this article’s writing, with no spoiler or official information confirming as much for the series’ near future. While it certainly makes sense as a direction for the series to head beyond Chainsaw Man chapter 172’s events, a defining aspect of Fujimoto’s manga is its unpredictability. As a result, truly anything can happen when the series returns with chapter 173 next week and beyond.
