Chainsaw Man chapter 173 began with a focus on how the world had changed since the death of the Ear Devil, for both humans and animals alike. For example, a pack of cats and a herd of elephants were each seen missing their ears. This transitioned into a focus on Public Safety, which confirmed the disappearance of the Ear Devil via an experiment on prisoners. They then had Team C commence their operation in a bathroom.

Here, each member of Team C cut off the tip of their left index finger before picking it up with their right hand and using it to write on a mirror. One wrote “H” while chanting “cervical spine,” and the others “I” and “neck,” and “T” and “vertebrae.” This shifted focus into Hell, where what seemed to be a new Primal Devil seemingly read the word “HIT” off three mirrors that appeared before it and showed the letters.

The Primal Devil then held up its fist and pushed it through one of the mirrors, causing a massive fist to appear above Pochita and seemingly squash him. However, Pochita revived and escaped by cutting off two of the fingers, but was caught by Hirofumi Yoshida and the Octopus Devil shortly thereafter. The issue ended with Pochita being squeezed by the Octopus Devil and throwing up Ear Devil’s head, with a panel of an elephant confirming ears had returned.

While the purpose of sending the Ear Devil to fight Pochita was heavily scrutinized, the purpose seems clear heading into Chainsaw Man chapter 174. Public Safety was looking to confirm that things swallowed by Pochita can be retrieved under certain conditions, suggesting that there’s something within him that they also want.

However, War Devil Yoru is also undoubtedly nearby and aware of this fact being confirmed herself, in turn setting her up to begin fighting Pochita to bring nuclear weapons back. The issue will likely end with her, Yoshida, and Pochita in a three-way standoff, and possibly even the new Primal Devil introduced in the last issue being present as well.
